Auto-brightness on Voyage

Auto-brightness has never worked on my Voyage. Every time there's a software update I try it again, but no joy.
Does it just not work, or is there something I'm doing wrong.
If I turn it on, it will dim in dim light and brighten in bright light, just the reverse of what it's supposed to do. The only time it actually works is if I turn it toward the sun or a bright light, then the brightness will go to zero.
Because of this, I leave it turned off.

No, that's exactly the way it's supposed to work. In dim light, you only need a low setting of the frontlight to illuminate the screen. In brighter light it takes a higher setting to make the screen look illuminated. In very bright light (eg direct sunlight) it turns off entirely. It's working correctly.

So, in complete darkness, the light would go off altogether? That doesn't make sense. In dim ambient light, the screen dims, forcing me to strain to read it. That doesn't make sense to me either. And in bright ambient light, the screen brightens when I don't need it.

No, it will not completely go off. Now I noticed your age in another thread. Or should I say your eyes age.
I would recommend you set the light to where you need it. Defaults are not always good.
I have to turn lights way down on any screen I use, my husband on the other hand has his screens on bright. Note: we are 50 and 60 respectively but have worn glasses since elementary school.
I don't know if that correlates to me being near sighted and him being far sighted.

Ereaders and some phones adjust themselves to background light.
Hope this long post helps.

Yes, that's what I've done; set it to a comfortable level and leave the auto off. It's just that I thought the auto would decrease battery drain.

Maybe a wee bit, but if you can't see to read what good is a battery.
The wifi is the big battery drain.
I always read on my devices with the wifi off.
Oh and welcome to Mobileread.

No, in complete darkness the light is on, but at a low level. If you're in darkness, you don't want a very bright light shining into your eyes.

The light sensor learns your preferences. If it's too dim for you in poor light, manually adjective it to your liking, and it'll remember your preferences.

Okay, I'll have to give it another shot.

I leave the auto-adjustment off on the light on my Voyage. I set it manually. I rarely need to change it.

When I've tried the auto-adjust it was always changing itself, usually not for the better.
