Laserjock, how do you duplicate your Sony books on the iPhone?

I've read a couple of books on my Sony that I've also had on my iPhone and found that very useful since I always have my iPhone with me. Being able to read the same book on both is very handy.

I use a great program called Calibre (http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/). It can convert ebooks into epub as well as LRF format and will also organize them for you on your computer. Calibre can also modify the metadata of each ebook allowing you to specifiy author and genre information. Unfortuneatly there is no direct way to install ebooks onto the iPhone; once converted to epub you will have to place the ebook onto a website like Stanza or Fictionwise (http://stanza.fictionwise.com/) for downloading onto our iPhone. The service is free, just go to the site and register. Calibre also has a built-in web server; you can use Stanza on the iPhone to log onto Calibre running on your computer and download onto your iPhone. It's not as difficult as it sounds, info can be found on the Calibre website.

Thanks Laserjock. I assume that, if the book is DRMed, you have top deal with that as well. Correct?

I suppose. I haven't had to deal with that yet; none of my books have DRM.

I don't mind having 'the conversation' with people about the ebook, but I hate it when they want to argue about how paper books are better. Obviously I don't agree, or I'd be reading a paperback!

I agree. In fact, I did read the paperback the guy on the beach so pleasantly gave me and this was my first pBook in over a year. And the truth is, they are no better than eBooks. And with eBooks you get all the advantages; portability, lower costs etc.

I read mine in China and when people stop and look at it over here (in China, they will just walk up and either grab it out of your hand to inspect it or come right beside you to stare. It is not regarded as rude) they usually think it is pretty cool when I show them the pages turning. I have no idea what they are asking but from the facial expressions, they think is it pretty neat.

I have never had anyone look at it when I am in Canada.

I get people asking me about my Kindle constantly. I also explain that there are other types of e-book readers and the reasons I prefer my Kindle over the other brands.

Generally once they understand that the cost of newly released bestsellers from Amazon is only $9.99, most books are less, and that there are several resources for free books, they get more and more interested. By the time I spring Whispernet on them, they are quite keen on getting a Kindle.

I do tell them that if for some reason they don't care for the looks of the Kindle, and they don't care about Whispernet, then they might want to consider something else. Generally, I let them know that several types are available from Amazon and leave them with that.

Most people don't seem to even notice what I'm doing, and those that do think it's the coolest thing they've ever seen. If they are interested, I'll talk their ears off about how much I love my sony and all the great features. Unless I'm way more interested in getting back into my book...

I've never seen anyone else around here with any sort of ebook reader, so I'm something of a novelty, it seems!

I use mine every day at work, on my breaks and for stealth reading Im always going on about how I love my Sony etc etc so a lot of people think its really cool.

I dont know anyone else with an EInk reader though, my partner uses a Palm for reading and actually I dont even know anyone else who uses any type of ebook reader!

I use mine partly to store my lectures (thus avoiding having to print all those notes), and my students are always very interested in what it is and how it works. Seeing how loaded down they are with all those books, I sometimes wish all students had access to an eBook reader as part of their entrance to school/university, the same way some places were giving iPods some time back, for audio lectures.

Oh well, maybe some day.

I had a director (almost literally) drooling over my reader the other week...

Only for him too finish the conversation by saying. "It's really cool. But no use to me, I don't read". Yes this was after he spent 20 minutes going on about how wonderful it was, and how clear the screen was...

I hate that! But maybe they know someone who does, and will pass on the good word.

That's the general attitude around here also. In the past year, I've only seen one other person "in the wild" using an e-reading device. But I think they would be more accepting of your romances than they are of my scifis. Not only am I, apparently, wasting my time reading, but for crying out loud, I'm wasting it on space stories! I should be using my time more efficiently, for instance, by heightening my hair or applying more mascara.

I actully do have the Holy Bible on mine, so that would be a great question to serve as an opening to introduce e-reading to someone.
