I can't remember if the original terms excluded tax or not. (There is currently no tax on ebook purchases where I am, so I didn't take notice.) Maybe that has changed too?
I think there were some reports here of people getting taxes refunded early on, but people were also getting refunds when they had paid less than the competitor's price because of a coupon. In other words, Kobo didn't really seem to know what they were doing. (Shocking, right?) Kobo doesn't tax me either so I haven't paid too much attention to that.

I just don't understand why I would choose to go through the effort of a price match if it is actually going to cost me more than just shopping at the competitor.
I had thought the idea was to get %10 off the competitors price.

Kobo support has confirmed that this really is how price matching works.
When pressed on what the point of doing a price match is given it still costs more than Amazon they were unable to come up with a satisfactory answer.

It's unfortunate that Kobo changed how the program worked and things didn't go as expected. However, if I calculated correctly, you paid 30 cents more at Kobo than you would have at Amazon.

Did you receive Super Points after the transaction?

Yes it really wasn't much more, and I guess with the super points calculated in it is technically cheaper. Still, its not the aggressive price matching they implied it would be. More of an attempt to keep customers than gain them.

The 10% might be intended more for offsetting the tax than beating the competitor's price. I don't get charged tax, but if I did it would be less than 10%. And someone with a Kobo device might feel a few cents and a couple minutes was worth it for the convenience.

"Difference plus 10%" is relatively common in retail, and Kobo's the only place I've seen where you essentially pay tax twice. (Once at the beginning, and again when you use the credit.) They really should be refunding the proper proportion of sales tax as part of the credit, and I wonder if it's even legal for them to keep the tax overpayment.

This probably varies by location but in Canada, when a rebate is involved, tax is paid on the full price and not on the price after the rebate. I'm assuming the price matching scheme is considered a rebate and not a sale. I'm not sure why this is so but it has been my experience in the past.

The problem is that they are giving it as a store credit and a store credit is treated as a payment method. As with any payment method the store credit is subtracted from the total due - after tax is added to the price of the book. So when the credit is used you are paying taxes again.

If it's supposed to be a rebate with no refund of the tax paid it doesn't make sense for anyone who pays tax to use it, and Kobo should state exactly how it's supposed to work. But this is Kobo we are talking about.

Recently got a Kobo email re the 'free' books on the website. Here are the links:

https://store.kobobooks.com/en-CA/Co...campaign=00005

Yes well, as we know things don't run particularly smoothly at Kobo!(understatement!) Some of the items listed actually have a price listed for the book and are definitely not 'free'; although it is good to see that the majority they have listed are free.

Also, the links to the various genres on the page aren't working .....

The below link is to the Free ebooks section that you can click on if you choose the major heading 'ebooks' at the top of the page, and then on the right hand side of the dialogue box you'll see a heading 'New and Notable', and further under that 'Free eBooks'.
https://store.kobobooks.com/p/free-ebooks

Again, you'll see that there are prices listed for some of those books, and they aren't free.

Oh well Kobo, I'm sure that one day it will all come together .....

They've been free on Kobo too, this is just a way to highlight them.
