Maximum about of "personal docs" or other ebooks you can add?

Hello,

I've learned now that Kindle/Amazon allows uploading your own docs or books purchased elsewhere in the mobi/azw3 formats to your Kindle account. I was thinking I may consider consolidating my ebooks in this manner but I suddenly wondered what the limit is for how many books you can add - either a number or total amount of space used. If I remember correctly, the maximum size per book/file is 50mb but I'm just not sure if there are limits to the total number or space allowed. I'm secretly hoping it's unlimited but I'm sure that won't be the case.

Any info would be super helpful! Thanks in advance.

As mentioned in this thread: you get 5 GB total space, no per-file limits.

Are you sure about that? There was a lengthy discussion about this when personal docs were merged with Amazon Cloud Drive back in 2014, and I was under the impression that there was no specific storage limit for personal documents, although the Personal Docs terms of service contains the statement "We may limit the number of documents you send or store through Kindle Personal Documents Service.", presumably as a get-out for people who abuse the service.

Around the Cloud Drive merge, they said PDOCs would be part of your Cloud Drive and count against your starter 5GB -- and you'd get more PDOC space if you paid for more Cloud Drive space.

Some people kicked up a fuss about the change, and ISTR they switched back to the way things were originally... but I just looked again and you are right they don't give any hard limit.

It appears I remembered wrong.

I can't find the details now, but I think the free storage is 5GB if you are a Kindle/Fire owner, plus another 5GB if you are a Prime subscriber. The storage can be used for whatever you like. If you buy mp3 from Amazon or upload photos from a Fire device, that doesn't count against the limit.

That's Cloud Drive storage. Kindle Personal Docs don't count against the storage limit.

They (Kindle and Prime cloud storage) were merged some months ago, it is all in Cloud Drive. There is a folder in 'All Files' named 'My Send-to-Kindle Docs', with all Personal Docs in it.

Yes, there is, but nonetheless, as I said, personal docs don't count against your Cloud Drive storage allocation (unless there's been a recent change, that is).

Edit: just checked, and that's definitely the case. From Amazon:

Quote:
... after sending a document using your @kindle email address, it is now considered a Kindle Personal Document. These files are not counted towards a Cloud Drive storage plan.

Thank you all so much for this! It is exactly the issues bantered back and forth here that had me completely confused. I had done my best to read up of the subject via searches but given the changes that have happened over time (merges into Cloud Drive, counting against Cloud Drive initially with the combines 10gb space, etc) that had me flummoxed. You may well have helped me alter my ebook management plan. I thought the size limits would make uploading all my other books impossible...
