I have the Navy blue OMOTON case and no problems with mine but I believe the wake and sleep feature works by a magnet so it could be that the magnet isn't aligned correctly or it's defective.

Do you have the device set to NEVER power off in the settings? If not it may be going from sleep to powered off if you leave it for a while. This could explain why it's only intermittently not working.

I got the black Forefront case from Amazon. Very satisfied! It's light, thin, closes properly (can't imagine someone having a problem, maybe with older versions) and has sleep functionality.

I've set it to sleep after 15 minutes and I close the cover and as quick as 30 seconds later, I open it only to find a frozen device. I temporarily turned off the sleep when cover is closed function for a day and now, it's working well again. Must have been a horribly formatted ePub because it only started acting up when I started reading 2 new books and this 3rd book I just finished didn't give me any sleep cover issues. All my books are sideloaded btw.

Updated: it is still happening even if I turned off the sleep cover setting. Might be my device which has become buggy because it would freeze at random times even while I'm reading.

For my Glo HD I have a case called HUASIRU ordered from Amazon. It's great: perfect fit, slim, perfect function (auto sleep/wake), cheap ($10), several colors available, and seems well-made. Highly recommended!
