Oh I see. Well this is an HP laptop from 2008 so I'm not even sure Android existed at that point (did it?) and the tablet I was connecting with is a Samsung so I don't know about either of those pirating USB IDs. At any rate, at least we know where the error is.

I wonder if there's a way, in some future version of Calibre, to overcome this problem as it's conceivable other people are experiencing it.

BTW, I think the problem also drastically slowed down transfer time because book transfers are way zippier now that I've uninstalled the Android driver.

3rd party USB devices can/do exist internal to products made by others.
The Laptop maker might be unaware that one of their vendors ceated on a USB id.
Of course, it could simply be an error that caused the wrong ID to be added to the Android PI

UPC/EAN barcode is another common area that gets cheats trying to avoid industry assignment fees.

Not likely. The person who asked for it would almost certainly have tried it using the real device when it was released.
