Busy reading M T Anderson's Symphony For The City Of The Dead. What an educational read, and gripping, too. It is a Young Adult title but that is no barrier to adults because it such an intelligent and well written (and researched) page-turner. That it is a title from a previous National Book Award winner, shows.

Just finished Linda Nagata's very accomplished near-future military sci-fi trilogy, The Red, consisting of The Red, The Trials, and Going Dark. Unlike most mil-sci offerings, Nagata can actually write convincing, fleshed-out, complex human characters. You know, like a real author

On my last chapter of T H White's harrowing and personal classic, The Goshawk. Fascinating treatise and biographical text from a quirky, brilliant, and frequently misanthopic genius.

Reading The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen... I know, I was supposed to read Odd Thomas next, but what can I say, I'm fickle.

The edition my library loaned me had a bonus prequel short story "You Are Destined to Be Together Forever" included. A nice parting gift from this series. I really enjoyed these books, it was a lot of fun to see the world, as scary as it was, through Odd's eyes.

Next up: Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson, April's MR Book Club selection for the "Award Winners" category.

The Kim Stanley Robinson Mars books are really good. They are on my reread list.

They get a lot better as they go on, though. I felt personally that the first of the trilogy was the weakest by a considerable margin. "Green Mars" and "Blue Mars" were much better, to my mind.

Reading Red Mars is a good set up for the next two books, though... it's like reading LoTR without reading Hobbit... it's doable, but the experience is more enjoyable if you read the one book first.

Finished The Queen of the Tearling, which I enjoyed more than I expected. Now reading Odd Thomas for reals this time... took me about a chapter and a half to realize that I saw the movie, but that's okay-- don't remember the end and the writing is pretty good.

And I also finished reading Journey to Munich -- about an hour ago. Even though the atmosphere in Germany was very somber, I thought that Maisie herself wasn't as dark as in A Dangerous Place.

I'm certainly not suggesting that anyone skip the first book

. Just that the other two books are (IMHO) considerably better.

And it's often nice to know that you shouldn't judge the entire series on the first book. A recommendation from someone who has read the series helps.

I'm currently nearing the half-way mark in The Mote in God's Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. It's my pick for 1974 in my chronological SF challenge. Most of the books up to this point have been around the 200 page mark. My battered old paperback of this one is 560 pages, and they're printed kind of small, and it doesn't even have page breaks between chapters. It's not going that quickly.

It's OK. It hasn't really grabbed me, so far, and it's not yet much of a page-turner, either, but I'm happy enough to read it. It's just that it seems like it might be a long time before I get to read anything else.

Do you think you are going to read the sequel, The Gripping Hand?

I am halfway through Odd Thomas, which is good, but I am looking forward to reading the second Tearling book... and I will likely be disappointed that I'm going to have to wait until at least November for the last book in the trilogy.
