I've noticed that quite a few of the ebooks I've already purchased aren't showing as such on the Kobo site. They are visible in my "My purchased items" in my library, but if you go to the specific title's page it shows a "Buy now" button instead of the normal "View in Library" button.

The times I have seen this is that the edition I bought is no longer sold by Kobo. Finding the book in my library, I can see the details for the edition I bought. But searching the store will show another edition.

I had this happen with some of Kobo books. I still have access to the book in my Kobo library, but the Kobo website is asking me to buy the book.

This happens when the publisher removes the existing book and uploads a different edition of the book. This also happens if the book changes publisher. |

That makes sense, but it's a weird way of doing things. Unless it's an entirely new edition I'd think you should have access to the updated versions.

I don't buy from Kobo, mostly from Amazon and from smaller places like Smashwords, but I always get a free updated version of previously purchased books from them. From Amazon, they automatically download whenever I connect with my Kindle for PC or my PW2. Places like Smashwords I have to login and get the new version, but it's still free. The only exception there would be the pricey textbooks that have a new edition put out yearly.

So Kobo does not give you the free update of ebooks that have corrected editions? Or is there a way to get it for free? Obviously I think those should be definitely be free. |

For updated books, it depends. Sometimes it is a different edition and hence, you don't get the update. This could be for different reasons; new publisher, added material or just something in the deal between the publisher and Kobo. But, from reports here, they do update some books and people are receiving the the updated copies. They don't send out notices about this, so I don't know how often it happens. And I haven't knowingly had it happen to me. But, I have only received two or three updates to books I have bought from Amazon, so I'm probably not a good sample.

Updates such as those fixing typos and such can usually be had, but first you have to know the book was updated and second you have to get Kobo CS to push the new version to your account.
