What am I looking for and where is it if posted?
Doesn't Calibre have any setting to show you what FORMAT a book is in?
Due to the fact that I also have lists for Android which has Adobe Reader and FB reader, I can save HTML, PDF, DOC, TXT and RTF. I also have some old Palm formats, too. I have a mess of duplicate books that will show the format in windows, but I will be damned if I can figure out how to mark them in Calibre and the tablet. I can then either delete the pdf if I have converted to epub or convert it. I'd rather use Calibre since it does show more info than having to open programs in Windows. I have an 8G card. I want all my books over there and none in the Kobo's memory. I put them on the card using Calibre, and they wind up in main anyway. If someone can explain why the books aren't going to the selected save, and where the info is to add a column that shows book formats such as epub, I'd appreciate it. I tried changing the Glo to only do PDF and about 6 books which I knew were unconverted epub turned up in the search. Tried in reverse - only show epub, and there were PDF files in there. One is an astronomy observing guide that I bought from O'Reilly and that is way too anything to be switched to an epub! So I know Calibre was in error. Thanks If s |

Of course calibre can show you what format(s) for a book is available in your library -- it is in the Book Details panel, and you can also do a search on
Code:
formats:"=FORMAT" |

The details (and Information) pane normally shows the formats you have for that ENTRY
The tag browser is very powerful click on a format (green +), presto all books of that format Hold down the ctrl key and click twice (Red -) and you now see All Books with the First Format and NOT the second format Code:
formats:EPUB and not formats:PDF |

I find it helpful to create a custom column to show the formats I have
'Formats' is one of the supplied examples so it was easy to add |

I couldn't find any example of setting up a format column. If it's in a video, I don't do videos. I can read faster. What I want is the books shown in the same manner as Windows. Title, author, file format, size, I can't get the main library to do it, and definitely not the device or card. My tags column is used to sort genre. Do I add to it, or what? I did try that, it only highlighted epub when it was the first entry. I converted "The Martian" from Kindle to epub so I could read it, and epub was the last file listed. The Kindle format came first. |

Found most of it, some still are not right, will have to fix individually. Why can't they use the Dewey Decimal System?
I have copies of Astronomy Magazine, old astronomy books, cookbooks, patterns and even some apks for android sitting on the card. Sometimes Kobo will show something it can't open, and you have to hunt it down. Why won't it put books on the card, then? It says I'm almost out of onboard memory, but I've been putting books on the external card. It looks like Kobo is transferring preferred books to the internal storage for some reason. It will show things in triplicate and if I check the card on Android or Windows, it only shows one copy in the internal memory, and 1 copy on the card. I put the book on the card. |

If the device can't open it after this, then it is probably an error in the file. Or it has DRM. Quote:
So, exactly how are you sending the books to the card? And how are you seeing that they end up in the main memory? Does calibre show the SD card when you connect? Can you write to the card from outside calibre? |

If Kobo would show file formats even if it can't or won't open them would help. Then I could make sure I have the right file when I'm deleting.
I don't download to Kobo. Usually wifi is off. I download to the computer, then transfer to the ext.drive - on my computer, that's usually f. I don't use the Kobo desktop, either. It's disabled on the computer. I use usb cables. I do have to use Amazon Desktop if I buy from them, but it gets disabled after use. If I have a mess of books on a usb device or another card, I use Calibre. There is a heading for device and one for card. I use card. Card to me is external card. Device is internal memory. I just copy and paste. I switch the card between and Android tablet and the Kobo. I'll see books in triplicate on the Kobo, check the internal memory, and the external card, and I don't see the listings. Kobo will add the book in the original file format if it's been converted, and by doing the highlighting all the epubs and pdfs, I found out that where the format tag is matters. If epub is first in the list, it gets included with the epubs. If epub is last on the list, it is overlooked. Example - converted Amazon. Amazon's AZW3 or whatever shows first in the formats, then a comma, then epub. epub is totally ignored in that position. Same with PDF. Somehow Kobo is seeing both tags and putting both files on the card, even if I only say to send one. (the epub) If I hook up to the computer, I only see one file. On the Kobo, there are 2 or possibly 3 copies of the book. Kobo Library shows only one copy. I'm still using the last 3.15 ---- whatever. The Android 4.1 tablet doesn't do this. It's looking like I might have to find an e-ink Android and get rid of Google. I don't need a Google account for books. I can purchase on computer and download. You had articles about changing to linux on the e-reader. I'm familiar with Ubuntu and Mint, but even those give file formats on the computer. Would they do the same on an e-reader? I'd need a step by step. I've done phones but only used CyanogenMod as they had the best instructions, step by step. Last edited by Alpha o; 03-27-2016 at 10:27 AM. |

In in calibre, the books on the device come from the database on the device. It it has three copies, then calibre will show three copies. The could be in the main memory or on the card. The rest, I'm not sure what you mean. If I send a book to the device, the format selected is the first in the list in the driver configuration. By default, that is kepub and then epub. As I don't keep many kepubs in my calibre library, that means the epub is sent. Quote:

How? Within calibre or outside calibre?

If I'm using Calibre, I send to device or card. You hit the problem. It is the file formats, and since I can't get the Kobo itself to show them, I have no idea which one I'd be deleting. Sometimes searching for duplicates using the computer works. What is Kobo doing when it says it is processing the library or new books? I had all my books on an ext. SD card and now they are in the internal memory. Every time I've edited the card on the computer, Kobo sticks all the books, new and old, back on the internal memory. Can't Kobo read from an external card and leave the book there? Does it fill up the internal memory first, then use the card? Most of the books were on the external memory card to begin with and now they are not. I download EPUBS since I sometimes read on the Acer at night. I see no setting that allows that. I also have no more room on the internal memory and it's supposed to hold a couple of thousand books, and I barely have 300. I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to clean this up and start over. Will Calibre put all the books in the library on the ext. card? I can clean up the Calibre library, sort the books out, reformat the card on the computer and put the books on the formatted card. Then factory reset the Kobo. |

If you sideload the books, they go were you put them and don't move. Quote:
I'll have to admit, I don't know what is going on. What you seem to be describing, the firmware moving books, just doesn't happen here or have I ever heard of it happening. But, lets confirm what you are saying: - You put the SD card in your computer and add books. - You take the SD card out and put it into the Kobo device. - The device processes the books into the library. - You connect the device to the computer. - When you look, the books that you put onto the SD card are no longer there and are on the main memory. Is that what is happening? Or at least one of the ways it is happening? |

That's what seems to be happening. I bought the Kobo since it used a card. I had a 4G card in the old Nook with regular free or purchased like from Baen EPUBS. I must have had about 200 books of old Sci-Fi from Smashwords, Gutenberg, and Creative Commons.
I put the card in the Kobo, and they all appeared in the library. I just assumed everything was normal until I started getting the duplicates. I looked at the card as drive F on the computer, and there were only 4 books on it. The rest were in E. AFAIK, E is internal memory. It says pretty much the same in Calibre. So somehow the books from the card got transferred to the internal. It could be a mistake I made in Calibre if there is a command to do that, but I usually doublecheck everything before clicking on it. I bought 2 books last night and the Kobo would not download unless I updated. It seems to have left alone most of the stuff I either denied or deleted. (I delete dictionaries) don't want Pocket, don't want social, don't need reading tracked. Don't need the games and extra either. Give me one good serif and non-serif font, and I'm happy. I don't remember anything in setup about the card as a destination - like save files to. I'll have to reset the Kobo, but I've got to get the file formats in first. And like I said, on a search, if you have converted a book, the original shows up first in line, then the EPUB after a comma. That means opening each book and changing the tag if it was converted if Calibre will let you do that. None of the new Kobos use a card, do they? I want a card, I don't want a cloud. Thanks I think most of the duplicates started after I started using Calibre to convert formats. Why books got transferred to internal stumps me. The Android doesn't do it, but then I use Windows to transfer to an SD card, not Calibre. Last edited by Alpha o; 03-29-2016 at 09:20 AM. |
