Finished today Fools Die on Friday by A.A fair aka Erle Stanley Gardner. Next, I'll take a little break from Gardner, and read Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke, recently purchased from Amazon.

I'm about a third of the way through Seanan McGuire's Chaos Choreography at present, fifth in her "InCryptid" series and the third starring Verity Price. There's a peculiar cadence in the epigraph that begins Chapter 4; it's very similar to a refrain from the children's book that she "quotes from" in her "Parasitology" series (as Mira Grant).

Somehow this release completely slipped by me! I've been waiting for the next Verity book.

The Soldiers is going well, but had to be temporarily put aside for An Alliance of Equals. The eARC of this latest in the Liaden Universe from Sharon Lee and Steve Miller is out and is very much worth the read.

Well, finished The Games of Supervillainy by C. T. Phipps... as amusing as the first, though I was not happy with the same kind of issues as before, namely dropped words, some misspelling and the occasional punctuation problem.

Plus, one chopped up paragraph... oh, and the author decided to name his genre 'capepunk', which offends my literary sensibilities (and makes my geek-sense twinge).

Seriously, I feel a torrential rant coming on over this.

This ended up being very good. I wish there was an update to cover the last few years.

My diversion was too short lived so I need to come up with something else for the weekend. I will probably try something I haven't read for a very long time: Dragonquest by Anne McCaffrey. The second published Pern novel and somewhere far down the list chronologically.

Okay, figured it out. I read Tracking Magic, by Maria E. Schneider, and it turned out to be a good choice for a busy day that consisted mostly of "hurry up and wait" chores. A short collection of stories about a (human) PI who operates in a world of magic and supernatural beings. The stories are well-written and while magic figures into the mysteries the solutions rely on real-world logic and insight. There was some humor, but also poignancy and loss -- not unexpected in stories about mysteries and ghosts.



And now I'm on to the fourth and fifth installments in Victoria Houston's Loon Lake Mysteries series. I had a couple of discounts at Amazon from picking the "slower" shipping option on some purchases. And, with any luck, I'll have time to devote to reading "real" (but short) novels.

Finally completed Agatha H and the Clockwork Princess. I didn't realize it was 515 pages when I reserved it from the library. This story continues immediately following book 1 and it was a fun ride. Lots of originality, humor and surprises. Foglio kept me guessing (incorrectly) throughout the book. I'll wait before starting book 3. Rated C+ [3 stars].

I have been reading the Girl Genius online comic religiously almost since the beginning...

I read and finished Not My Father's Son by Alan Cumming. Kid had a rough life.

Now on to The Autobiography of James T. Kirk by David A. Goodman.

Next up, Odd Thomas (in English, this time) by Dean Koontz.

I've been away for a few days and had a lot of reading time on trains and in hotel rooms, so a few books read:

"Tiger in the Smoke", by Margery Allingham. The 14th book in the "Campion" series. Campion goes up against a ruthless killer who is determined to get his hands on a treasure hidden in WWII. I think this is probably the best book in the series so far. Absolutely excellent and highly recommended.

"Resurgence", by Charles Sheffield, bought from Baen in 2002. The 5th and final book in the "Heritage Universe" series. A direct continuation of the story from the first four books, and very good hard SF. Unfortunately the story is left incomplete, and this is the final book in the series, due to the author's death from a brain tumour in the year that this book was published. An extremely enjoyable series, even incomplete.

"The Shape of Water", by Andrea Camilleri. The first book in the "Inspector Montalbano" series, set in Sicily. I've long enjoyed the TV adaptation of this author's books, which are shown on BBC TV subtitled from the original Italian, but this is the first book in the series that I've read. I enjoyed it very much; the book is well-written and very witty, too. This book is about the apparently natural death of a local politician, which Montalbano thinks is not as straightforward as it first appears. Again, highly recommended.

"Skylock", by Paul Koverski", again bought from Baen in 2002. Military SF, set in a mid-21st America in which civilisation has collapsed due to a change in the Sun's output. I really didn't particularly enjoy this one, although it wasn't bad enough for me to abandon it. The political stereotyping is crude, with a Soviet army officer consistently referred to as "The Red", which I found distasteful. Not recommended.

I was having trouble getting into anything but I read John Scalzi's Lock in pretty quickly and quite enjoyed it. Fascinating concept.

Finished The Autobiography of James T. Kirk, which was actually pretty good. Half synopsis, with a dash of fanfic and a bit of creative retconning, the author managed to tie the original series and all the Shatner movies into one more-or-less unified character, even going so far as coming up with a plausible explanation for Final Frontier.

For a TOS fan, this is a good companion, and a heck of a lot faster than binge-watching three seasons and eight movies...

This was better than the first one, I remember why I loved this series so much now.

I have The White Dragon but I think I should read DragonSong and DragonSinger first which are not available from my library. I will see about getting them from Amazon here sometime soon.

I am waiting for The Three-Body Problem to be available at my library so I am going to work on finishing up the Odd Thomas series instead. Next up: Deeply Odd, Odd Thomas book 6 of 7, by Dean Koontz.

Neatly wrapping up the trilogy. A fun romp (well, fun but with lots of explicit violence) through a 1930s with magic.

Next up: Spartan Planet by A. Bertram Chandler. Fifth in his John Grimes series. Just to see if I do want to carry on with this series or not.
