Just my luck, Amazon have removed the Paperwhite emulation from the Kindle previewer, and it automatically updated. I'll have to dig around for the old one.

Trying to buy an old Paperwhite atm. Nobody I know round here has a kindle of any kind.
The Voyage emulation *should* (famous last words) show you the same thing, other than a glitch with Voyage that affects image displays.

If you are in dire need, you can send me the file and I'll test it on my PPW, if you wish.

Since we've seen the CSS, can we also see one of the XHTML files that's not displaying properly?

Well, sure. I get spanked by teacher, I remember the lesson. That, I suspect, is why so many American high-school graduates are functionally illiterate. Instead of Sister Maria with a ruler (edgewise for me and Joe Tobin, on the knuckles; flat on the palm for Maryanne Quigley) they are exposed to grammar by compassionate, caring, sharing Educators.

Ouch! I'd like to think that I'm not quite that mean, nj.

A wee chat about the rigors of Catholic educators:

Spoiler:
FYI: I have enlarged knuckles--not grotesque, thank heavens, but noticeable if one looks--to this day from my sterling education at the hands of nuns and Jesuits. I was, er....not devout, let's say. I graduated from the flat of the palm to the edge of the ruler/knuckles QUITE early on.

If you wonder about my Socratic methods--blame the Jesuits at St. Ignatius Loyola and Mt. St. Mary's. It's a miracle I didn't end up at a Cath. College. Thank God--I'd have ended up an entirely different person. That being said, however: if I'd reproduced, you can bet your bippy I'd have sent offspring to Catholic schools for the far better education than public schools, particularly nowadays. I have no regrets about the education, nor what the Jesuits <beat> instilled in me--the ability to question and to learn.

Problem solved. Many thanks.

@ JSWolf, I used your css and it did the trick. Found the old Kindleviewer and Paperwhite shows no problem.

@Hitch, thanks for the kind offer of a test. I appreciate it. Not necessary now, I think (hope).

Happy to help. How did you create that CSS? It looks like some automated program did it and did it poorly. You should always hand check your CSS unless you hand craft your CSS.

You should compare what Wolfie gave you against what you had, and find the mistake (presumably) that was making your book go haywire. I didn't see anything in Lint to indicate that it was there,but...{shrug}. Until you go line-for-line, you possibly never will.

@Hitch: BTW, I'm working on a CSSLint Sigil plugin. It's pretty much done, but I still need to run some tests.

Yes, but it's a command line tool that is primarily designed to optimize stylesheets for cross-browser compatibility. I.e. it'll complain about some perfectly acceptable CSS rules because they might cause problems with older IE versions. OTOH, it'll flag some issues that the W3C validator misses, e.g. empty rules or duplicate values.

What, specifically, was the problem in your CSS, Dave?

No I wrote it myself but borrowed some parts from a penguin ebook that I presumed made sense but i didn't properly understand. I suspect now, from other details in the penguin that they used Calibre for something, so maybe that's why it looks automated.

Unfortunately I haven't the time atm to test every change systematically, so I don't know what caused the problem yet. I'll try to do that, but I'm way behind with everything.

An interesting experience, trying not to use automation. I don't know would I recommend it; although at least I can be confident of the markup logic if not the css.

Don't borrow CSS from an eBook made by one of the BPHs unless you know exactly what the CSS does. A lot of the CSS they use is generated by some program that does a rather poor job. They also have many CSS classes that are not used. You would be best to learn HTML/CSS and code your own. In most cases, it is very easy to do.

My view of BPH processes grows dimmer by the day.

Not to be a tired old recording, but: if you don't do that, what did you learn?

Quote:

Did you create the entire ePUB by hand? All the markup and the CSS? That's an excellent learning method.

I wouldn't count on the "markup logic," based on the discussion thus far. BUT, if the final ePUB passes ePUBcheck, AND does what you want when converted...I guess that gets you where you want to go. My inference is that you are more interested in getting your book published, than really learning the nuts and bolts, is that correct? Or am I mistaken? Sorry--I don't really recall the beginning of the thread.
