Unless they are businesses or collectors, or people filling in their "last month's purchase" (and not buy as much or anything the rest of the year), it's a bit hard to believe...

I mean 20+books per month, means you need to read at least a book per day, unless maybe smallbooks of a couple of pages, are been seen as a book purchase too.
Ahh, but buying 20+ books a month doesn't neccesarily mean you're reading 20+ books a month.

And if you have the time, it's perfectly possible to read that much in a month - the books I have by Simon Brett or Alexander McCall-Smith, for example, only take a couple of hours each to read.

I voted 15-20. In the six months I've had my Reader, I've bought a little over 300 books (plus downloaded free books), so the actual average is 50+ books/month. But since that amount of shopping just *cannot* continue... I decided to vote for 15-20 since that will be a realistic figure in the future. At least I hope so - I'll never have time to read them all if I keep buying like I have... I am a fast reader, but there's no way I can read 50+ books a month (unless I quit my job and read full time, and then how will I pay for the books eeekkk.... what a dilemma!)

Hmm... If I cancel my cable TV and Internet service I would be able to move that budget to books... perhaps buy me 15 a month. And, since I'd have no TV or internet I would probably have time to read them.

Thinking?

Not really - 20 books a month means you have to read only 4-5 a week and I've had weekends where I've read that many. I tend to mix fast reads in with denser material, so it really depends on my mood. When I'm reading fantasy or SF, it's usually a few hours to finish them, while certain nonfiction books I'll stretch out over a month.

I don't usually buy or read that much but had lots of vacation time, holiday time and a bit of sick time in the last quarter of 2008 so ended up reading a lot more than I usually do. Sometimes I read a couple of books in a day when I am on vacation. And no, none of the books I counted were pamphlets, instruction manuals, short stories or other books of extremely limited page count.

I don't know about you, but most of us read books in their free time, and have day to day jobs.
Usually when I come home in the evening, I spend about an hour or two per day on internet, and watch an hour or two TV.
Books for me usually are for the weekend.

I'd understand someone to be happy with 30minutes or no internet per day; and reading book for 4 hours.
But I can't finish a regular book in 4 hours!
Usually when I have 4 hours, and a 280-400 page book, it takes me 3 days to finish.

I never was a speedreader.

Yeah, but then you won't be able to update the poll!
The Kindle would be perfect for you, if you could go on the forum with it!

*PS:I voted <1 !*

I read in my spare time and have a full time day job. I'm not a speed reader, but I do read fast - always have done. My spare time includes the two hours a day I spend commuting, whilst cooking, when I'm getting ready for bed, and in between doing other stuff (hobbies, browsing online etc). I don't watch much TV, though.

I usually list reading as a hobby on my CV. I've been asked once in an interview what I like to read, to which my answer was "whatever I can lay my hands on - I'll read the back of a tin of beans if there's nothing else around". If I had no other hobbies, I probably could read 20 odd books a month.

I only have to buy 1 -2 books a month --free books to download, the library and gift certificates keep me in books. I'm a fast reader and often re-read books -- hate it when I pick up a 'new' book and by page 15 realize I have already read it!

Well, I have bought 278 books from Fictionwise in my first 6 months of having a reader. ~40 were short stories or novelettes. Maybe 50-60 were rebuys of pbooks that I have read. I have been stockpiling a lot from all the great sales. I have read 95 in my bookshelf. My overall savings has been 50%, including 6 years of membership. Once I get through reading everything currently in my bookshelf, my reader will have paid for itself.

I expect for the next 6-12 months my purchases will be quite low. Except if I can get some more ebook copies of my existing pbooks.
