I just tried it more carefully, and it is now working the way you said. I think I must have hit the back button when I didn't see the results I wanted which reset the grouping.

That certainly improves it for me, but I would still appreciate you thinking about the filter auto-reset idea. If it isn't too much work.

One other thing while I have your attention. I am not sure if this is a bug or a design decision.

I use (and love) the CC book widget. Every now and then, I will open a book in my reader and then delete it from CC. When that happens, I get a spot for the now deleted book which show the CC icon, and if I tap it, I get a "the file does not exist". That icon stays there until I have opened enough books to push it off the end. Sometimes a few days, sometimes a few weeks.

Is there any way you could surpress that icon for books that don't exist? Just remove them from the list, and show the six most recent existing books?

That is a bug. Deleting a book is supposed to remove that book from the "read" list. Next time it happens could you send me a debug log?

I just sent you a log. It didn't happen this time, but the old entry is still there, so I thought it might be useful. I also sent you a screenshot so you could see I'm not crazy. In this case.

Tap on an item and you go there.

The content server connection cannot do the hotlinking because calibre doesn't provide the mechanisms.
What mechanism would it need to work? I use cloud/content server connections to switch between 2 different libraries. Having that functionality in both would be awesome.

Or... companion specific: would it be possible to store and connect to more than one cloud connection? That would provide the desired functionality AND access to multiple libraries...

Adding the linking to the content server won't happen. It would require *many* changes to calibre, and even then I am not sure it would ever work correctly.

You can already do this. You can tell CC that you want to use multiple cloud providers (in Settings / Connecting to calibre / Cloud connections), and you can easily switch libraries within a single cloud connection (in the cloud connection menu).

Is it possible to make groupings based on number-based custom columns make a bit smarter? One of the columns that I have is the word count, to keep track of the length of the book. As you can imagine, very few books have exactly the same word count, though. So when I try open a drawer and look at the available options, I end up with a lot of entries such as "45342; 45344; 48500; 62001" etc. Having a library that is 1500+ books makes up for a lot of entries.

Realizing that there can be a lot of different types of number-based columns, perhaps a log based system would be more reasonable? So, leaving 1-9 as is, 10-99 would be in increments of 10, 100-999 would be in increments of 100, 10000 to 90000 would be in increments of 10000, etc.

Turn on first-letter grouping for that column. That will give you a "layer" where the numbers are partitioned by 100s up to 10,000, then 1000s thereafter.

Depending how how you use the number, you might also want to turn on auto-sort for that column and show the numeric value in the list view (Settings / Customize the book list / Extra information in the book list). That would simplify scanning the values in a partition if you are looking for something in particular.

Eh, I would say that this is still an order of magnitude too small of a graduation (for example, if I want to scroll to anything longer than 10K words, I need to pass by up to 100 different categories with just a handful of books in each as opposed to just 10. Or, once you get past 100K, it makes no difference if it is 120K or 125K or even 150K, for example.
I do have all sorts of different sorting set up, and I do show a lot of info in the book list, but it would still be nice to be able to group everything a bit more effectively.

The problem is that there is no single "right answer" for this. In some cases the values are clustered at the smaller end, and in some cases at the larger end.

When this feature was added back in 2014 the user community settled on this partitioning. Changing it now would change it for *everyone*, which isn't something I am at the moment prepared to do.

Would it be a lot of work to add Sharefile as one of the supported cloud providers? We might be switching from dropbox at work, and that would be an important thing I would miss.

Sharefile offers OAUTH2 and a REST API, which means that is could be possible. I glanced at their docs and (like most of them) they "aren't very good" (expletive deleted) so I don't know how hard it would be.

What it comes down to is that I would need to be able to get access to a *free* account so I could try it. The attempt may result in flames or in something that works. My guess is that as long as their API allows folder navigation (and it seems to) and file download (it really must) and doesn't create strange hoops for "business accounts" then it should eventually be possible.

I just checked, and it doesn't look like they have a free account.

I would say forget it, because in addition to it not being worth your effort to try to get a developer account, Sharefil not having a free account means you would probably have very few users of this method of syncing.

If we do switch for work, I will probably upgrade my personal dropbox to the Pro, version so I can keep going that way..

What you want to do is make a column built from other columns in Calibre that already *has* those values, and then CC can just use it.

first_matching_cmp() would be the function you want to use, and you might want to pad the output with leading zeros. So you have 0000100, 0000100, 0005000, 010000, 020000, etc, all the way up to 900000. And first_matching_cmp() essentially is used to 'round up'. (Although it actually returns whatever arbitrary string you specified...you just specified a bunch of numbers.)

It's also possible that CC can correctly sort those numbers without leading 0s, I don't know. Or maybe you can use spaces?

If you can't figure it out how to code that column, you should ask over in the Calibre Library Management forum.

How about a way to delete more than 1 book at a time w/o having to use the computer?
