Well after being very frustrated, and resetting the phone....I found out why I couldn't log into Microsoft on the phone (or use Cortana, or get an app....). All because the time and/or date was wrong. Now it's working again. Strictly as a media player (no sim card installed at the moment).

Glad you were able to figure it out! I don't have a SIM card in mine either. I'm using my Nokia 520 as a music player (paired to Bluetooth speaker) and to receive email notifications.

I don't have any blue tooth speakers, but I've been using it for music and audible books. It's working just great for those, and it's thinner than my LG Volt. (The cases used may be a factor). It's really nice for those applications.

HERE is pulling Maps from Windows 10 Store, ceases new development

Nokia 520 uses Win 8.1, so get ready to lose these apps.

Edit: I just read the HERE Blog and nowhere does it say that support will end for Win 8.1 devices. I then went to the HERE Maps app on my 520 and it only said that Win 10 devices would cease functionality. I do believe the article has it wrong about Win 8.1 devices.

Quote:
According to a new post on the official HERE blog, HERE 360 will be removing all HERE apps from the Windows Store. As of March 29, HERE Maps, HERE Drive+, and HERE Transit will no longer be available on Windows Phone 8.1 or Windows 10 Mobile. HERE apps for Windows Phone 8 will continue to be supported (you STILL use Windows Phone 8?).
Quote:
For Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile users, that means that HERE-branded apps will no longer be functional as of June 30, 2016. HERE 360 would have to invest money in building the apps from the “ground up,” which is a business scenario that they are not interested in pursuing.

That is too bad. I use the HERE apps a lot as they are great for GPS use. I hope the ones I have won't quit working. I understand them not going to Windows 10 phone but since they already work on 8.1 I don't understand withdrawing them from that platform.

I do believe the article has it wrong about Win 8.1 devices.

I also learned that Nokia sold HERE to a group of German car manufacturers last December, hence the reason for it's withdrawal and/or cessation of development from these devices.

I suspect that upcoming changes to the next major release of Windows 10 Mobile - a.k.a Redstone - will remove support completely for non-Universal apps, and Here can't be bothered to recode theirs.

We'll find out if this is the case when Microsoft hold their annual Build conference for developers next week.

There is also a new app, Maps, from Microsoft that will take over from Here Maps. I've been using that since I got my new phone (with Windows 10).

Does it support offline maps? If so, does Microsoft allow them to be stored on the (micro)SD card? Thx.

Yes and yes. Actually, Here Maps, Here Drive and Maps all use the same maps...

I believe the biggest difference between Here Drive and Maps is that Here Drive has turn-by-turn navigation, which isn't implemented in Maps (yet). It has navigation though, but I've never really used Here Drive for navigation and I've never used the Maps navigation (yet), so I cannot really comment on that. I mostly used Here Maps and Maps offers the same functionality for me.

Thanks.

As you say, no turn-by-turn yet. This article says it's coming:

"This Windows 10 update also heralds big improvements to the Windows Maps app for handsets and PCs. Maps is now more consistent between phones and PCs, and has a lightweight user interface. Some of the features added to Maps include one-tap access to search and directions, Cortana turn-by-turn directions, and quick access to cities rendered in 3D."

This one says Windows 10 is coming to these phones:

"The new operating system is available to the Lumia 430, 435, 532, 535, 540, 635, 640, 640 XL, 730/735, 830, 930, and 1520."

But not announced to these phones:

"There are some significant omissions, such as the Lumia 520, 920, 1020, 1320, HTC One M8 for Windows, and the Lumia Icon."

and to get Windows 10 you should install and run the Upgrade Advisor app from the Windows Store.

Nice discovery, for me - the 520 has an FM radio, and it's not hidden. I just bought a little FM transmitter thingy, and was able to use it to play an audio book over an old boom box. I got it for vehicle use, mainly. None of our vehicles have audio jacks, and neither does our really nice boom box. Couldn't find FM radio in my android phones, so it was nice to find it in the 520!
