I can browse the store web site, but it does occasionally block a page, which has been a little frustrating not only at Sony's, but other bookstores too. (Must be something naughty on that particular page?) But when I select a book it tells me that I need to download their software which I've already done 3-4 times. If I go ahead and do what it says and try again, part way through, it tells me that I already have it.
My head is starting to hurt!

Sorry to hear this is so frustrating for you! If you are going on the website just from internet explorer, it will tell you that you need the software, even if you have it. You can only buy when you are in the ebookstore via the library.

Good news, bad news:
My ISP uninstalled my filter and now I can connect to the ebookstore-- Yay!
And I bought two books I'd wanted

Now, I plug in the Reader to get my books, guess what? Now I get:
USB Device Not Recognized

It recognized it before!
I might have to get some chocolate covered pretzels (see thread : How do you handle stress?)

That is weird! Did you let it stay connected for a while?

If you haven't already, first try rebooting your computer. If that doesn't help, then try resetting your reader by sticking an unbent paper clip in the hole in the back of the reader.

good luck!

Yes, I was connected pretty long. After much frustration, I just disconnected and turned off the Reader and shut down my laptop. After several hours, I tried it again and everything worked this time! Does it overheat or something, if it's been connected too long?

So, just now, I went ahead and re-installed the custom filter my ISP set up for me, after creating some sort of exception for the web address for the store. And now I can't connect again. He told me I might need to contact the Sony eBookstore to get an IP address or some more info to customize the filter. Where exactly do you find the number to call? I'm too tired to do anymore with it tonight, so I'm calling it a night. I'll start over again in the a.m. Wait, it is the a.m.... later in the a.m.

I have to say even after all of this, I'm gonna' love this device, once I get all the kinks ironed out!

Well, after an hour on the phone with Sony tech support, I'm still blocked. I guess I need to get an IP from the actual program/servers, not the website, to gain access to their store. Something about our proxy's not getting along... I guess my filter is more of a bridge and I need a password for the ugly troll in order to get across. I need to gear up for another round with Sony tech support, or just forget about purchasing from their store or getting my 100 free classics. I did get about 19 of them while I could connect. I had a wish list started too.

On a more positive note, I got to read in bed last night! It was awesome! I think that this is actually a Sony 500/505 thread, but I have the 700.

Holy moly! Can't you just do whatever you did the first time so it'll work?

That would mean getting rid of my filter (which I won't do) or calling my ISP everytime I want buy a book, so they can give me the key to uninstall it. They'd love me for that I'm sure.

If the ISP are filtering something and removing those filters makes it work... I'm afraid there isn't anything you are going to be able to do to make it work with the filters in place.

I think your best choice is to forget about using the store if you aren't willing to have the filters disabled permanently.

That said, pretty much any of those "free" 100 books you can get for free here in the download section. They will also be better formatted too.

i'm confused. Why would they "love" for you to do that? Do you have to pay them to get a key to uninstall something? Where are these filters? Are they installed on your computer. I'm not sure what you mean by "uninstall" the filters.

I was being sarcastic. I think they would find me being a bother. The filter is not installed on my computer.

You may consider disabling them -- such filters are ultimately completely ineffective at blocking access to undesired content. Most can be completely circumvented by accessing the desired site via a distributed cache system. For example, many filter systems seem to block http://www.suckless.org/ (it's a software development site, nothing bad), but let you access it just fine via the CoralCDN: http://www.suckless.org.nyud.net/.
