merging books using release 0.8.44

I've been unable to install any newer calibre releases on my XP-based laptops. Am still stuck with calibre 0.8.44. Am looking to see if it's possible to merge books or separate HTM files into one book in this older calibre. Any suggestions besides upgrading? Am working graphics heavy chapters in HTM and converting to EPUB at the beginning of this exploration.

Thanks for any answers to this.

No.

The EpubMerge plugin requires calibre v0.8.57 at least.

And Windows XP supports all versions of calibre up to v1.48.0 so unless something is seriously wrong you *should* be able to install it. And you say multiple laptops have that same problem...
What happens when you try to install 1.48.0?

If you're at all worried about 1.48 not running on your laptop, you could install Calibre Portable 1.48 into a different folder as a test. If it doesn't work, simply delete the files.

Thanks for the help. Every time I try to install via 1.48.msi, both of my laptops tell me it's an invalid installation file. (These are similar HP machines running XP Pro 2002 SP3. They are alike as they came from the same company when they were upgrading their tech fleet.) I'm in ADMIN mode so this part should not be a problem...or so I presume. I've tried over and over and over to install thinking it might be some little stupid glitch that could be resolved by mindless obstinancy, but to no avail. Neither machine will yield and recognize the MSI file.

Thanks for the suggestion on Portable. I'm not worried about it; just can't get the MSI to initialize. Will, however, give Portable a try.

You are stuck at 1.x versions because of XP.

What processor is in the HP? Another issue to watch out for is no SSE2 (not found older AMD Athelon).

Invalid MSI: (if it works nowhere)
Your ISP is messing with/caching the file, so you get the same. Download from another ISP's Connection

Try one of the Alternate Mirrors

DO NOT use a download manager. They can break files

Thanks for the suggestion on an alternate download location, but I see no other mirror for downloading the Windows 32-bit Installer.

http://download.calibre-ebook.com/1....bre-1.48.0.msi

I have used both the home computer (fiber) and the office computer (DSL) to independently pull in the MSI. Will try yet again.

I stand corrected. I found an alternate download site under 2.53 that DID have older versions available.

http://www.oldfoss.com/Calibre.html

Will look to them.

There's a link to page where you can download the 'official' older versions on each of the 'official' download pages :

Name:	Capture.JPG
Views:	123
Size:	61.8 KB
ID:	147046

The highlighted link takes you here ==>> Previous calibre releases

Sounds to me like you might have inherited some restrictions imposed by the original owners of the laptops to prevent installation of msi's - i.e. corporate lock down. I've been away from XP for too long to suggest anything other than install a fresh copy Windows XP, preferably from MS media.

If you can shoehorn another gig of ram into the laptops then maybe you could run Win7 or Win10 on the Intel Dual Core CPU's.

Thanks.

I had gone to that location to get the older MSI for 1.48. That's the one that was giving me so much trouble. The other download location had the file and I got it from there in case the original from the calibre site had be mismanaged in the download.

I was able to will the installation into being by simply continuing to hit the LOAD button not believing that newer file was also bad. I just kept hitting and hitting and hitting it until the INSTALL window finally showed up. Then that one told me the file was bad and asked to CANCEL or RETRY. RETRY RETRY RETRY RETRY at least a dozen times. No bull! And finally it loaded.

So now 1.48 is on the office machine and I expect I will have to do the same on the home machine. Who says doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is a mark of insanity? (chortle)

Thanks again to everyone who offered help on this. It's been greatly appreciated.

Curious - what's displaying this "LOAD button"?

BR

Last LOAD button I recall seeing was on a circa 1960/70 control panel, it was next to the DEPOSIT button - might have been a PDP8 or 11 or maybe even a core-in-the-door GE Datanet FEP.

I wonder if he is suckering into the 'sponsored' content on the download page.

Nope. You can get there yourself by going to the calibre page, looking under the 2.53 download for alternative sites. One of them (#1, I think) has 2.53 for download, but it also asks if I'm looking for older versions. That one has a dropbox for various versions.

"Curious - what's displaying this "LOAD button"?" It may not actually be called LOAD, but it's the dialogue box that displays when I try to execute the 1.48 MSI. Maybe it says RUN. I've forgotten.

No hidden agenda here. Just really appreciative of the help.
