I'm continuing to read and enjoy Catherine Aird's Inspector Sloan mysteries. I just finished the 13th, The Body Politic. The author must have some connection with the mining and metallurgy trade, because many of the later books involve firms of that type as prominent background elements - not in a "drown 'em in minutia" way, but as a source of plausible motives and motivations. While she has her share of elaborately constructed murders, several of the motives are well-hidden in plain sight.

I've just finished a long read: "Gardens of the Moon" by Steven Erikson, the first book in the 10-volume "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series. An epic fantasy in every sense of the word, featuring "a cast of thousands" and a wide scope. Extremely enjoyable, although by no means an easy read. I'm very much looking forward to continuing with the series. Very highly recommended, but not a book (or a series) to be taken on lightly: you'll need plenty of time on your hands.

Meanwhile, primarily on the audiobook side, I'm in the middle of a re-read of the Vorkosigan Saga from Lois McMaster Bujold. Just finished Memory, the book that transitions Miles from his Admiral Naismith character to his new role as Imperial Auditor. I'm really enjoying the re-read, especially since the narrator, Grover Gardner, is one of my favourites. |

Just finished "Summertide" by Charles Sheffield, which I bought from Baen a very long time ago. This is the first half of the "Convergent Series" omnibus, and the first book in the "Heritage" series.
Humanity has colonised the galaxy, and found it littered with gigantic and mysterious artefacts built - and abandoned - millions of years ago by a mysterious race dubbed "The Builders". Dr Darya Lang, an expert on Builder Artefacts, travels to a star system where her calculations suggest that an event related to the Builders may be about to happen, but she's not the only one to go there, and not everyone's motives are academic. Good book in a good series. Unfortunately Baen no longer seem to have the rights to sell Charles Sheffield's books, although people who bought them previously (as I did) can still download them. A great pity - he's one of my favourite authors. |

Wow. Just finished Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm a Supervillian, and I have to say that this is likely to be a new favorite.
The book was just plain fun from the get-go, and it isn't a short read, either. I mean, I actually giggled with glee several times through this novel. I already have the sequel queued up, but first a little light reading about The Man Who Broke Napoleon's Code... |

Just finished Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch based on recos on this site and it was pleasant. A sort of Harry Potter meets a London Bobby.

Then I read one of the Neil Gaiman comics from the recent Humble Bundle - tricky on a 6" device! And now I'm reading A Wizard Alone by Diane Duane. The New Millennium edition. |

Just finished "Death Du Jour" by Kathy Reichs, the second book in the "Temperance Brennan" of detective stories featuring a forensic anthropologist working in Quebec. This book is about an investigation into a series of murders linked to an apocalyptic cult. Very enjoyable. An excellent series.

That was a good book... I think I'm supposed to hit book four... I went to re-read the VI Warshawski books instead. I'll get back to Reichs eventually, though.
