Best ereader in Germany
I need an ereader in Germany. Whats available and whats good?
Requirements 1. Eink 6" screen. 2. Frontlight 3. Ideally accepts epubs. 4. Minimum store intervention. It would be preferable not to have to register the device, but its more about minimum intervention. 5. Ideally available in high-street stores. I am aware of the Tolino, Trekstor, Onyx and Kindle. I dont know much about the Tolino and Trekstor. Are there others, like Pocketbook? |

Tolino I wouldn't touch with a stick. |

The Tolino readers are probably the easiest to find, they are sold in a number of bookstores (you can check here) but I don't know much about them.
The Kobo readers should be available in Mediamarkt/Saturn stores but I don't know if every store stocks them. You need to register the Kobos but it doesn't have to be a "real" Kobo account, any (dummy) e-mail address will do for that. I'm perfectly happy with my Aura HD, though the one fitting your 6" requirement would be the Glo HD. |

The new Tolinos are actually really good. Lightweight, sharp and bright screens. The Tolino Shine 2hd can even be rooted and fitted with a larger SD card. The Vision 3hd is waterproof. Both can be bought at Saturn, Mediamarkt and bookstores like Mayersche and Thalia.

I know the 1st Tolino - enough for me to never touch another.
The pocketbooks were either mediamarkt or saturn, forgotten which one. I have a touch lux, my sister has my previous: a touch. |

Pocketbooks are available at Saturn and Conrad stores.
The Tolinos have really improved compared to the earlier models. The screens look the same or even brighter than the Kindles. The Tolino 3hd is a little thinner and lighter than the 2hd and has a flat screen from edge to edge. Plus you can tap the back to flip the page. I'd go with the 2hd, it looks more robust. Yes, I see little extra value in the 3HD over the 2HD.
Danke schön! Very helpful. |

I am big fan of the PocketBook brand.
Unfortunately the latest models, such as Touch Lux 3 have firmware that isn't as good as the legendary PocketBooks of yesteryear. Mind you, they are still very highly configurable with large number of suported formats, even third-party apps you can install, such as Coolreader or even terminal emulator. It just makes me angry that they are dropping some interesting features. Have a look at the latest model of Tolino Vision 3 HD. 300dpi 6" screen behind a glass - just like Kindle Voyage. It has Android that can be rooted, so you can install interesting apps for reading. Has a number of interesting features, like "tap to turn the page". Oh ... and it is waterproof. |

Tolino isn't a good choice of you manage your collections on your computer.
There might be ways to do it, but not with the readers out of the box. I don't know the 2HD and 3HD. But I will never buy a Tolino again. It's nice for using it with the original online stores, but sorting the books is really complicated. |
