I've filled up my Voyage with over 1700 books, and still have space left according to the "quick look" function when it's plugged into my Mac. I'm amazed at how much i can get on it, as I thought local storage had been coming down since the Kindle Keyboard, but the advertised "thousands of books" on Amazon seems to be true. How many books can you get on your device?

I never try to find out I can not read them all at once so I have only the books I am reading at the time. If I am reading a series then I will load the complete series on my voyage and remove the books that I have read. So I never have more that 25 to 50 books on my voyage at any one time. Oh and that also counts for the newstand items that I have. I read the Ellery Queen mag. every month but I believe I still have all of them on my voyage at this time.

I have 1866 books on my Voyage, and about 300MB free space. Not a good idea to let the free space fall much below that, because the indexer needs a fair amount of space to run.

Many of my books are omnibus editions, so I probably have a little over 2000 books in total.

Yes, a lot of space. 4gb i think. And if im not mistaken, same happens with Paperwhite 3.
But although i have a HUGE library on the PC, i dont have more than 50 at the same time on my Voyage.

@Waylander: Well it all depends on type of books, or to be more precise how many of hight res images it countaing and/or embedded fonts. Text-only books are minuscule and you can have thousand of books like that, but "only" 100 of books (still more than enough IMO) like this one (check the "File size" info ), and that is a fiction book, nothing fancy scientific or the like.
But that books uses high-res images for chapter headings + those illustrations all of which look just as good on my new Paperwhite 3 with it's 300dpi screen as they did on my old Paperwhite 1.

As for how many books are on my Kindle. At the moment only 42 books, since I bought new Kindle 5 months ago and I'm still to lazy to transfer already read books from my old Kindle. I mostly read books that are part of series and keep the read ones on my Kindle until I've finished reading the series. And many, many series have more books yet to be writen and released then previous books are sitting on my Kindle for years, for me to be able to do quick search for character names and refresh my memory when new book in series finally comes out Other then those already read books I rarely have more than 20 books on my Kindle waiting to be read, and usually transfer new ones in batches of 3-5 books at a time.

I used to have 'thousands' of books on my Kindle, but I realised that Calibre is a far more versatile library administration tool than my Kindle.

So, now I keep my thoudands of books in Calibre on my PC, and use my Kindle for reading, for which it is perfect. I have just 25 books in each of two collections, a personal reading list, and a youngsters' reading list.

I periodically refresh those two lists from time to time, a trivial task, as the need arises.

Well, for those who like to have FAT libraries consuming space on their Voyage reader, be very selective with the Delphi classics titles.

You know who you are!

To each his own but i'm like you, I tend to get overwhelmed if I have too many books stored on my Kindle at once time. I like to have a short list of what i'm planning to read and refresh as I go along.

I should add that my 2000 or so books on my Voyage only represent about 20% of my ebook library, which is of course in Calibre. I like to have a good selection of books on the device because I sometimes work away from home for long periods, and it gives me a good selection of what to read next when I finish a book.

I've played with it on and off, filling it up and then testing it out. The comfortable limit seems to be 2000 books. (Mine don't tend to have illustrations, around 200 pages or so.)

More than that, and it becomes really slow, and then will lock up. It's fine with just a book open while I'm reading, but once I go outside and try to do anything it got slower it got until it just locks up.

I don't think it's the space, but the OS being able to process the number of books.

All the eInk machines I've had had a limit to what it can really process, no matter how much space was left in the machine or the card.

That sounds like an indexing problem. Add books in batches, and wait for one batch to finish indexing before you add the next. Don't let free space fall below a couple of hundred MB and it should be fine.

I did. The books were loaded as I had time, over about 5-7 days with many hours of indexing allowed between each batch.

Didn't make any difference.

But did you actually check to see that the books had finished indexing? Sorry to ask, but books can - as you know - get stuck, in which case it doesn't matter how long you wait. You need to look and see if it's finished.

Harry I have never noticed how do you tell if indexing has completed. I know I do not keep many books on my voyage so I never have seen an issue.
