Your quote says nothing about profits.
And also Amazon does NOT mark down the price of books. Every book's price is set by the publisher.
Amazon just distributes for a fee.
Not to mention if it is used paperbacks or hardbacks, the seller sets the price.

For ebook, it's at agency pricing for the Big 5

But for hardcover and paperbacks sold on Amazon, it's wholesale. Amazon can discount as much as they want.

Since Amazon can't discount ebook from the Big 5, they are doing it on hardcover and paperbacks to gain market share.

But at the same time, Amazon’s online print sales — driven by steeply discounted hardcovers and paperbacks, which in many cases were priced even lower than the ebook editions — ALSO went up.

Amazon fought Hachette in 2014-2015 (lot of articles about it). Amazon lost since Hachette got what they wanted which is agency pricing.

After that, other publishers follow suit.
How did Amazon lose?
They still sell those books.
The companies came to an agreement.
Amazon now puts on every big 5 ebook "the price was set by the publisher".
That is in the price box.

A lose would have been if the Big 5 had pulled their books.

Not true. The publisher sets the price of ebooks if they've signed an agency agreement with Amazon, but Amazon are entirely free to discount the price of non-agency ebooks, and likewise with paper books.

Show me where Amazon discounted a hardback. I want to see this book.
Because I just looked and I can find Dan Brown's Inferno going for everything from $2.75 to $19.20.
Not a one of those books has Amazon as the seller.
They all showed other sellers.

So if you will please find me these Amazon discounted books, I would love to see them.

I have only seen Amazon mark down ebooks if they were price matching.
Harry can you please show me an example of an Amazon discounted paper book?

Amazon wants wholesale for ebook.
Big 5 Publishers wants agency pricing.

The winner is the one that got what he/she wants. Amazon lost since they didn't get what they want. The Big 5 Publishers did.

Why Amazon would want wholesale for ebook even though it is not as profitable as agency pricing ebook?

Market share and happy customers. Expensive ebook prices = not happy customers.

Also, Amazon wants ebook to be grow. High prices will put a stop to that growth.

Also, with the "PRICES THE SAME" everywhere for Big 5 Publishers ebooks, Amazon doesn't have a pricing advantage over Nook or Apple.

For publishers, why would they want agency pricing even though wholesale is MUCH MORE PROFITABLE for them?

They want to put a stop to ebook growth to protect their print business. Higher ebook prices will mean some customers will go to B&N brick and mortar store instead to buy the hardcover/paperback.

Here you go:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Harry-Potter.../dp/0751565350

Hardback version of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child". Discounted by Amazon UK from £20 to £10.

If you'd prefer one that's actually on sale, rather than a pre-order:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cometh-Clift.../dp/1447252195

"Cometh the Hour" by Jeffrey Archer. Again discounted from £20 to £10. This is extremely common for best-seller hardbacks.

And finally a paperback for good measure:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Night-Manage.../dp/0241247527

"The Night Manager" by John le Carré. Discounted from £8.99 to £6.29.

No, I'm afraid I don't, because that's the ebook. Nobody's disputing the fact that agency ebooks have their price set by the publisher. I've given you three examples in my previous post - two hardbacks and a paperback - of discounted paper books, as you requested.
