As for the cop-out ending, that's the Code for you.
Have you ever watched Stanwyck's Night Nurse (which also has Clark Gable in one of his early roles as a villain)? That's a pre-Code film.

You're all a bunch of whippersnappers! How about the days when in order to see oldies, you had to troll the listings for Million Dollar Movie and The Late, Late Show, or haul your carcass to theaters such as the Thalia?
VHS tapes, pshaw!
I remember watching Mighty Joe Young repeatedly on Million Dollar Movie. I also recall that the first time I saw Gone with the Wind, I was flabbergasted when I recognized the music as that used for Million Dollar Movie. Who knew?

I actually used to sometimes hook up a tape recorder to the TV to record the sound for some classic movies in the days before VCRs.

Oh, yes! That was one of my Million Dollar Movie (or maybe it was The Late, Late Show) watches, the first time I saw it, as a teen with dropping jaw. Talk about your verboten topics! A topic that's still not addressed openly and frankly.

To break up the grim The Great Hunger, I've started Wodehouse's The Little Nugget, which also is read by Frederick Davidson. It's a little weird to segue from genocide to jocosity as imparted by the same voice, but so it goes.

Quite a transition, issybird. This isn't a Wodehouse I know, but I've not read one I didn't like.

I've got a long-term goal of getting through all of Wodehouse in more-or-less chronological order. This is one of the early ones in public domain in the US; with these, I can pick up the ebook for free at Amazon and get the Whispersync audiobook for $2.99. I'll be sorry once I'm into 1923!

I'm just finishing up a re-listen/read of Lois McMaster Bujold's Brothers in Arms, a Vorkosigan Saga book read by Grover Gardner. I've been working my way through these with some pleasure. The reader is excellent, and now that I'm coming at the series as a whole, certain themes, such as the discussion of medical ethics, are becoming more apparent and more interesting. IAC, they're great books for reading while swimming or exercising.

Next up in the series is Mirror Dance.

I'm listening to the Post Human Omnibus by David Simpson. Really enjoying it! I am in book 2 now.

Listening to David And Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell. Thought-provoking book.

I quite enjoyed The Little Nugget. Wodehouse is finally hitting his stride, finding that unique voice. I decided I was ready for another Sharpe; ironically, my next up, Sharpe's Rifles, also is read by Frederick Davidson. I don't think I've ever done three in a row before. It's not ideal, and Davidson's Sharpe is suffering by comparison with Patrick Tull, but I'm sure I'll get acclimated.

You'll do fine with Frederick Davidson/David Case, though I agree it's tough to follow after Patrick Tull.

My next is Sharpe's Eagle, also a Frederick Davidson (David Case)

I am listening to Jennifer McMahon--finished Don't Breathe a Word and have started The One I Left Behind. These are the sixth and seventh McMahon titles I've listened to, and I still can't decide what I think of her books. They all have a supernatural element, which is usually anathema to me, yet I keep reading them because there's something compelling about her style.

I am trying to reduce some of my backlog before buying any new audiobooks, as several new or upcoming releases are calling my name ...

I'm reading The Bonobo and the Atheist by Frans de Waal (narrated by Jonathan Davis). Assuming that the narrator knows more about the language than I, the main thing I've learned so far is that for years I've been pronouncing "bonobo" wrong. The accent is on the second syllable, not the first. Sometimes doing more reading than listening can get you in trouble.

It's because you recalled the commercial for Bonomo Turkish Taffy from when you were a young'un.

Not a word I've ever encountered, but my natural instinct would be to put the stress on the second syllable and pronounce it "bo-KNOW-bow". Short "o" on the first syllable, long "o" on the second and third. Is that how your book pronounces it?

What are we listening to? (audiobooks)

Alexa knew I was wrong, and wouldn't even open the book when I said "BO•no•bo".
