Why Does Portable Calibre Lose My Libraries? - Page 2

Firstly do whatever it takes to get your Y drive looking like what fidvo posted

When you 'install' a new version of Calibre Portable to a location that already has an earlier version of Calibre Portable, the install will only install the software, the libraries and settings will be untouched.

I think you're over thinking it.

I think you may have misunderstood my comment! I was most concerned that the installer installed the program in a place other than where I asked it to. I don't know how to force it to install where I asked to be installed. In reality, I now have two versions of the program installed side-by-side! As you said, it left the libraries alone - it just didn't recognize them!

@Sparky -
Lets say you initially installed calibre portable to Y:/Calibre Portable, and you moved your libraries into that folder and all is well

When you install a new version of calibre portable it will pop a folder location dialogue - browse to Y:/Calibre Portable - and select that folder, viz: where my D:_Sandpit folder is the equivalent of the root of your USB drive.

It that doesn't help, could you take a screen shot of the root and other directories on your portable drive as it is now and post here. Best way to post images is to go into Advanced mode and click the paper clip icon.

Before I do something really stupid, can I simply clear the folder "Y:\Calibre Portable\Calibre - Location of Calibre." to remove old copies of portable Calibre? Or, is there some preferred method?

You want to start completely over?
The Libraries (everything) must be gone. Initial installs require a blank folder.
Upgrades will overwrite the program files because the detect the install

Once installed, you can add back additional Library folders at the same level you find the default 'Calibre_Library'

Or

copy the libraries to your hard disk;
trash everything in Y:\Calibre Portable;
install calibre-portable-installer-2.51.0.exe to Y:\Calibre Portable;
copy the libraries from your hard disk into Y:\Calibre Portable;
start calibre and make sure it can see your libraries. If it can't, use Library->Switch/Create library->Use the previously existing library at the new location option to hook them into calibre;
install calibre-portable-installer-2.52.0.exe to Y:\Calibre Portable;
start calibre and make sure it's version 2.52.0 and you can see your libraries.

Hello:

Well, I followed your suggestions exactly (with one exception, as I will explain later), BR, but it failed! It sees the names of all the libraries, but when I attempt to switch to one I get an error message (see attached). The one exception I mentioned is that, in order to keep the file structure the same, I had to install both versions of the program to the root directory of my flash drive.

I will attempt to re-do your instructions while using a separate folder for my libraries as I tried to do before and report back!

@Sparky - as has already been said several times :

You MUST put your libraries - eg 'Completed Books' - in the Y:\Calibre Library directory

You CANNOT put them in a subfolder such as Y:\Calibre Library\Lou's Books.

Move the library folders out of Y:\Calibre Library\Lou's Books\ into Y:\Calibre Library\ with your file manager. Then do what I said before.

Get it going like that and make sure you can install a new version etc.

Then create a Test library in Y:\Calibre Library\ and see if you can move that library into the Y:\Calibre Library\Lou's Books with calibre - I don't know if it works in portable.

No it is NOT

your original post has them inside ANOTHER LAYER

No, it is. That was an earlier organization. Yesterday, when I attempted it, ALL of my libraries were located EXACTLY as you stated. That's my confusion.

According to the error message, Calibre is looking for books in a folder called "Lou's Books". Have you tried taking all of the books out of the "Lou's Books" directory and putting them into the Y:\Calibre Library directory?

If you have your library at Y:\Calibre Portable, you should install the next version at Y: Calibre will warn you that there's a previous calibre installation and will ask you if you want to update it. Say yes and all you your settings will be maintained. You won't lose your libraries and you can't set them at any directory you like (it is not necessary them to be inside the Calibre Portable directory).

In this way, calibre won't forget your libraries. There's a problem, however. If the drive letter changes from a computer to other, calibre won't find them as the path are fixed, not related to the directory itself..
