Autumn's Flame (The Seasons Series Book 4) - Denise Domning

-Originally published by Topaz, 1995
-Historical Romance, Medieval
-Goodreads reviews say this can be read as a stand alone even though it's part of a series

Amazon US---Amazon UK---Amazon Canada

Spoiler:

Upon her husband's untimely death Elyssa of Freyne petitions England's court to avoid a third forced marriage and to gain custody of her frail son. Never again will a man control her life or her fate. But the shire's new sheriff is no ordinary man. Although Geoffrey FitzHenry, Lord Coudray owns the beauty of an angel--save for the scars his dead wife laid on him--it's said he's the Devil's own spawn. He proves his black heart when steals her frail son from her. To save her son she must reveal that she is with child and put herself in the sheriff's custody.

Geoffrey FitzHenry curses the law that demands all pregnant widows live as the sheriff's ward until their babes are born. Taking this coppery-haired firebrand into his sphere threatens all he seeks to protect behind the rumors of his supposed evil nature.

Editorial Reviews:

"A writer of immense power and intense emotion whose star shines brighter and brighter." ~ Romantic Times Magazine

"Denise Domning's powerful storytelling weaves another truly unforgettable tale, making AUTUMN'S FLAME an outstanding addition to the Seasons Series ... [she] leaves us mesmerized and wishing for at least five more brothers left to tell." ~ Lori Wright, Literary Times, Inc

"Fast paced, action packed, romance filled." ~ Affaire de Coeur

From the Author:

Autumn's Flame is the fourth book of the Graistan Chronicles, the stories of the FitzHenry brothers. In this book I not only got to explore both the position of the sheriff and the idea of wardenship, but to share the amazing fact that sheriffs had to witness the birthing process of all pregnant widows. Now that was something I didn't expect, yet it made perfect sense against the mindset of the time..

As far as the content of the story, the book was written while I was grieving for my son Adam, who was murdered in 1994 just after Winter's Heat was published. Although the story of his life and death is as dramatic and tragic as any I could conceive of writing, it isn't one I want to write. Suffice it to say that I am now at peace with his passing and part of that peace came out of the issues I allowed Geoffrey and Elyssa to explore in Autumn's Flame.

I just made enough points for a fourth free book from HQ Rewards. I gotta say this is pretty cool. I haven't spent a dime. Now I need to redeem them so if anyone has a recommendation let me know.

I also saw that Harlequin American Romance has been changed to Western Romance. I'm not sure how I feel about this unless they plan to allow more locations like Australia modern westerns.

I got a newletter from one of the Samhain authors talking about their announcement to close down. So, even if they haven't made an official announcement, word's definitely getting around.

It's a shame they're closing. I like the way Samhain treats their customers. Hopefully they will treat their authors the same now.

A heads up that Samhain will be having a big sale on Monday (2/29) according to one of their authors.

I think it most has to do with prices. People are not going to buy books of new authors at the price range they ask on third party sellers. Sure they have sales and coupons on their site but most eReader owners prefer convenience thus Amazon, Kobo, Nook. You ever seldom saw a sale on third party sites. I will miss the freebies though. They were one of the companies that did have occasional freebies. Their Retro line never got the promotion it deserved.

I always appreciated that Samhain had resonable prices based on wordcount.

Sure a lot of self-pubbed authors sell full-length books for $0.99, but many also want $4.99 or more for a short novella.

I'll admit I did buy more directly from their site back when they had stackable coupons (or when the 30% coupons stacked with the 30% new release discount rather than cancelling it out). Lately I've been buying their books more from Kobo or Google Play.

I've rarely had problems with them, but on the few occasions there was an issue with a download or something, their customer service was always quick and professional. I also liked their funny Product Warnings.

I'm sad as I have multiple authobuy authors who stil publish regularly with them. They also made browsing their new releases and upcoming books easy, so it was a good way to discover new-to-me authors.

This is true. I too took advantages of their sales when they allow it stacked. I suppose promotion was probably the biggest issue. They just didn't know how to promote their books enough when it came to third party sellers.

Carina and other press started around that time seem to be becoming more and more in the background.

I have a long way to go before I am caught up on her books. I just finished the latest Stephanie Plum. I gave it two stars. Yep it was that bad. There is no way Janet wrote that book. It was full of discrepancies. Rangeman is seven stories not nine. Ranger's office is on fifth floor not third. Ranger's office is on the seventh floor not nine. Those are just two of them that irked me I lost count of how many like that their was. It had no humor in it that all the other books normally have. I felt alot of the chapters were just filler without the humor it was boring. If it hadn't been for Lorelei King I would have never finished it.

I have no clue what I am going to read next.

On a funny note I am making a recipe I got out of Paige Tyler's book Hungry Like the Wolf.

Samhain opened in 2005 (with the first books published Jan 2006). Carina opened in 2010. I've noticed the metadata on Carina comes up as Harlequin and has for about a year now. Ever since Avon bought out Harlequin Carina has seemed more just an imprint rather than the semi-independent publisher they started as.
