Well, my PRS T1/2 does have it and it works very effectively. Maybe it mixes whites with blacks to give greys or less greys. Don't know the technology. Don't really care.

Kobo also gives contrast option but not for pdfs. Sony is one of few devices that give brightness and contrast control for pdfs.

With the M92, you have an option called "glyph" that make the letters darker, something like a "bold" font and you can adjust this aspect with a parameter. It's working with the PDF.

The contrast settings are there in Android based Onyx Boox eReaders.

Settings can be applied system wide : All apps (reading apps, web browser etc) will be affected, Or a user can apply contrast settings locally to just an app.

Excellent video review. Thank you for posting. It is even more valuable considering its the only one showing none prototype device.

The Mobius eink screen is expensive which makes a finished product using it expensive. I get that and I get that waiting for proper hardware to catchup is exacerbating th problem in the epaper world.

Would you consider selling a replacement screen only 13.3"(is this possible)
I don't know if I will ever get what I want out of the box from a ereader manufacturer alone - camera document scanner, hdmi input, dual oled(video content)and eink screen plus swapping various eink screens 6"..13.3" etc.

Selling a replacement screen will allow me and/or perhaps others to build useful systems using an i.mx7 Duo SoC/SoM/SbC/SiP modules -Miniscule, Bite-size, Phytec, Toradex, Boundary are just the first few to already have announced such imx7 devices.
The list can only grow once Freescale releases the hardware.

Basically can the screen only be obtained directly is what I am asking?

What is your suggestion about new hardware? Wait until new parts are available in 2017? It would be never ending story and we will be finally starve.
Concerning price. A couple of months ago the wholesale price of the screen (Mobius) alone was by USD650! We are working with minimal margins to keep project alive. What could we do more? Innovations do simply have their price. People are ready to spend USD800 for iPhones (also produced in China but in much bigger quantities) but are disturbed be the price of high level ereaders.

You might try your luck here:

or

I would be interested to hear how to drive these epaper displays in DIY project too.

Hello everyone,

I'm new here. I was just researching on e-readers, & came across this thread.

I'm pretty much sold on the Boox Max. So I registered on your site, Booxtor. I'll be ready whenever the preorder is up. This project need to be supported to move on!

I'm planning to use it for my journal reading & note-taking in class. So I hope I can get one before July.

For the time being, I ordered i86 plus, which will be convenient for bedtime or commute reading; cause It's nicely sized & portable, and it support finger touch & frontlight.
Other than that, all my technical things would be better on the Max.

That's the best set up can I think of for now.

Is there a pinch and zoom version of the M92? I can't find one.

Do these settings work for image-based or scanned pdfs as well as for text-based or reflow pdfs?

They work on all kind of files. I find them to be essential for scanned pdf files.

These settings were also there in M92, which was an amazing reader for 2011.

Yes, but I understand that the touch versions of M92 or M96 are not efficient. Unfortunately I find working with a stylus is irritating. Therefore I am considering buying an i86.

And i am extremely satisfied with my i86. It is the best and the fastest eReader right now. I love its contrast and color of its lightening.

There are 2 settings for pdf files. One is Contrast and other is Bold.
Bold :- You have 5 or 6 Embolden levels and they darken the whole document.
Contrast setting :- Contrast levels are between 100 and 200.

By properly configuring both the settings, you can make any document perfectly readable.

But i will not suggest 8 inch screen size for reading pdf files. It is too small.

I will purchase Boox Max for pdf files. And i will keep i86 for reading epub files. I was bit annoyed initially when i learned that Boox Max won't have dual touch screens, but now i think that it is ok as we won't have to worry about palm rejection

Thanks very much for that. I have found my 8" tablet to be sufficient for most purposes but I agree that it would be different for all-day readers. I still have reservations about being obliged to use a stylus but I can see that is not so much of a problem if one actually has the whole page on the screen.

I looked more closely at my PRS T1. When you increase contrast the part of the page supposed to be already white becomes whiter. It's a Pearl screen too.
