Actual Librarian Nominated as Librarian of Congress

http://www.teleread.com/baltimore-li...et-in-the-way/

Carla Hayden is a working librarian with modern views of electronic media, user privacy, etc. Everything we expect of a librarian, but not what we have gotten from recent Librarian's of Congress.

Yet to be seen if her modern views and anti-surveillance stance will prevent her nomination from being ratified.

Member are reminded that discussions of the Librarian of Congress (outside the P&R forum) must avoid party political arguments. Posts breaking this rule will be deleted without notice.

A couple of 'firsts' here. First woman, first African-American, but not the first librarian according to the Washington Post.

In addition, the law was changed last year to make the Librarian of Congress appointment a ten year term, and the thought has been expressed that Congress may be more comfortable waiting and allowing the voters and next president to make this appointment via the electoral process, rather than the current one.

That seems kind of silly to me. Any recent precedent where a president has yielded their right to make important appointments to "the next president?"

Not that I can think of. Nor senators in their sixth year.

And yet those are the headwinds facing this candidate.

That's what I thought. Just curious, really. I'd heard something similar with regard to Supreme Court Justice appointments and was wondering why people even thought to suggest such a thing--let alone why anyone would actually entertain the idea of yielding that right.

"Please don't exercise your rare right mainly because we don't like you; and we think it would be a nice gesture on your part to accommodate this request (a request that we ourselves, of course, would never agree to in a million years). Thanks."

Apparently the Senators are using a series of lengthening legalist phrasing to cover this that is getting more and more specific. And incorrect. The latest Last Week Tonight with John Oliver show has a very good segment on this.

If you're a US citizen, and you think she will make a good Librarian of Congress, go to Senate.gov and contact your senators and urge that that they approve her nomination.
