But ... you would have gotten $5 for a $100 Amazon expenditure anyway when using your store card. So it's a wash--a Prime member with a store card isn't getting any advantage here for reloading at the minimum $100 level, and is losing money at the higher levels.

You sure? I think he got the normal 5% ($5) for buying the credit, then a bonus $5. So $10 total, right?

I got a $5 Amazon credit and spent it already - that's for this promotion. I will get a 5% credit on my Amazon store card balance after the current statement period is up. Every statement I get a 5% credit on my purchases for that period. Unless they don't allow it for gift card purchases - I will have to wait until I get my statement to know for sure.

It's 3%, not 5.

3% Back: You will earn 3% back for each $1 eligible Net Purchases made at Amazon.com. 3% Back applies only to purchases made at Amazon.com (including digital downloads, Amazon.com Gift Cards, Amazon Fresh orders, Amazon Prime subscription, and items sold by third-party merchants through Amazon.com's marketplace).

That said, you're not gaining anything by purchasing the gift card (except in this case the $5 credit) if you are using it yourself for Amazon purchases.

Yes, but you'll "lose" that bonus $5 by using the gift card for your next $100 in purchases, so there's no advantage.

The Amazon Rewards card (Visa) is 3 percent for Amazon purchases. The Amazon store card is 3 percent for non-Prime members, 5 percent for Prime members.

It finally sunk in. I'm slow today. But I did get the $5 credit from the promotion at least.

Sure there is an advantage.
I'm going to renew Prime - it will cost me $100.
I can run it through a gift card first to earn the extra $5 + my rewards points or I can just use my rewards credit card and get rewards points.

I'm still spending the same $100 regardless of method I choose. There is no lost opportunity to earn rewards points, they just get earned sooner by loading the gift card.

I think Catlady was talking about me using my Amazon store card to purchase the gift card to get an extra 5%. Since my next $100 comes from the gift card I'm not getting the 5% from my store card so it's a wash. I just get the $5 credit.
