One of the books I'm currently reading is Pinocchio: The Tale of a Puppet by Carlo Collodi. I always liked Pinocchio, even though I always preferred to call him Pinocchi-nose. This is the original version in which Geppetto, the puppet's creator, is arrested and thrown in prison for child abuse in chapter 3 because Pinocchio raised such a fuss upon being told to return home that onlookers feared Geppetto would beat him. Needless to say, it differs greatly from the Disney version. Remember Jiminy Cricket? There's a Talking Cricket in this one also who tries to talk some sense into Pinocchio's wooden head, but in this version, Pinocchio flies into a rage and throws a wooden hammer at the cricket, smashing and killing him.

And chapter 6 has this interesting opening line: "It was a wild and stormy night."

Having read Who Censored Roger Rabbit? before seeing Disney's movie version, I know how much Disney can change a story!

Just finished "Seas of Venus", by David Drake, which I bought from Baen in 2002. Very enjoyable military SF set on a future terraformed and colonised Venus in which evolution has become rampant, producing a world filled with unbelievably hostile creatures. Wars are fought by mercenary companies, hired by the underwater domed cities in which everybody lives, due to the hostile surface environment.

The book contains two main stories, "Surface Action", which is probably a novella, and "The Jungle", a full-length novel. There's also a travelogue at the end of the book in which Mr Drake describes a family holiday to Belize, which I found very interesting.

Recommended!

Just read the original Mary Poppins book if you want to see how much Disney changed stories for his films.

I'm just over halfway done with the final Kitty Norville book, Kitty Saves the World, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Not sure what'll be next.

Just finished A Better World by Marcus Sakey. Now starting my first library ebook, Reckless by Chrissie Hynde.

I like the Brilliance books so far; the first two were cheap, but I'd have to pay for the third. With that said, I also have some credits with Amazon from picking regular shipping, so I should be able to get it for $2.

Well, it's OK. But it's hard to introduce much tension in a novel when you know the broad scope of the historical outcomes. It also seems to be re-telling an already chronicled bit of Pern's story from a different viewpoint, which is also a bit disappointing.

Pretty good fan-fic, in essence.

Next up: Spellbound by Larry Correia. The second in his Hard Magic series. The most unbelievable thing in it is that history proceeds pretty much along the same lines as in our world, despite the (well-known) existence of many people with genuine magic powers (including healing) since the mid 1800s.

But it's fun all the same.

Just finished "Coroner's Pidgin", by Margery Allingham. The 12th book in the "Campion" series. It's 1944, and Campion returns home from three years engaged in secret activities on the Continent to discover his manservant, Lugg, depositing a corpse in his flat. This unusual circumstance embroils Campion in a slightly far-fetched plot involving a Nazi plot to steal British art treasures. Great fun, and highly recommended provided you don't take it too seriously.

Trying to finish up The Virginian by Owen Wister and Chaff on the Wind by Ebou Dibba. That will clear up The Gambia for countries and Western for genres.

I enjoyed this much more than the last book. There are a few things that I didn't quite believe but overall a good story.

Next up: Crocodile on the Sandbank, Amelia Peabody #1, by Elizabeth Peters from my library.

Thanks for the reminder. I have a whole bunch of Campion's here, but somehow got stuck on one and forgot about them. Time to load a few on the Kindle and just jump over the one I got stuck on.

Finished reading a short work by Ryk E. Spoor, Training and Truth. This is an origin story for his Balanced Swords trilogy, which I haven't read. But I liked this, so next up Phoenix Rising, the first in the series. I'm looking forward to it, I usually like his books.

I finished reading Cress by Marissa Meyer on Saturday. I'm about 91% into Thankless in Death -- 37th book in the Eve Dallas futuristic mystery series by Nora Roberts writing as J. D. Robb -- and will be finishing it in the next hour. THEN, I'll start reading Storm Front, by Jim Butcher, the first book in the Harry Dresden series.

Just finished "Fallen Angels", by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Michael Flynn, which I bought from Baen in 2002. It's some time in the near future, and the US is ruled by an anti-technology" government, who try to suppress any "inappropriate" scientific knowledge. A new ice age has also started, which isn't helping things! When two astronauts from an independent orbital colony crash-land in the US, the government is out to arrest them as "illegal aliens", but they are rescued by a group of underground SF fans (SF having been outlawed as "pro-technology") who devise a plan to get them back home.

Excellent book, and will appeal particularly to anyone familiar with the culture of SF fandom. Highly recommended.
