Since he was working for Pottermore, it's probably much like the Hats pictured on Dresden Files covers. The company who pays for the work specifies certain stuff.

Cool The Aeronaut’s Windlass Review

Quote:
I should, in the interest of fairness, begin with two disclaimers.

The first is that I freaking love Jim Butcher, to an extent that would make both him and my wife uncomfortable were it ever discovered.

The second is that I really, really dislike steampunk. Of all the subgenres in fantasy, it is the one that is most likely to make me sigh and shake my head in disappointment.

So to say that I went into The Aeronaut’s Windlass with mixed feelings would be fair. On one hand, I have loved most of Butcher’s work in the past and am always happy to get more from him even when it isn’t more Dresden that he’s offering up. On the other, steampunk. Like, I know I need to keep an open mind and all, but… ugh… steampunk.

You can see my dilemma, I’m sure . . . Trent Cannon . . . click here to read the entire review.

So, while waiting for a new Dresden Files book to come out, I've found another thing to keep me busy.

It's the Other Harry.
And our Harry.

Deal With a Devil

At the end of White Night, Lash sacrificed herself to save Dresden. But that wasn't the end of things -- she appeared in one of the fugue planes, where she was promptly accosted by the Watchman!

Uriel insists on pointing out she isn't *really* Lasciel, then offers her a chance at atonement. Voldemort has been reading books disseminated by one of the Fallen, and he wants her to mentor Harry in return.

Harry is 9 when he finds an unusual coin...

The author happens to be an excellent writer, and the story is engaging.

Lots of exciting things -- comparisons between HP magic and Dresden Files magic (nevernever ==> apparition throws her for a loop),
Spoiler:
forgotten races, Slytherin Potter, and the real reason Lily Potter's sacrifice protected Harry.

Still at the end of Year 1, so we have a ways to go.

Indeed.

Good fanfic is always a pleasant surprise, Sturgeon's Law is weighted against it.
Extremely well-written Harry fanfic is just awesome!

It's been receiving updates every ~2 weeks, so the wait is quite manageable.

Do you have any idea when the author might complete this book as I hate to actually start reading it before it's all available. I've got all of the 22 available chapters loaded on my Kindle Voyage (even created a cover) and ready to go.

I've found a neat diversion too, a 5 book (a 6th is scheduled for later this year) series called 'Peter Grant' by Ben Aaronovitch. It's about an apprentice wizard working for the London Metropolitan Police.

I honestly have no idea. I am less picky about these things.
Plus, end of Year 1 seems like a good point to declare a division and say it's the "end" of the book. Maybe the author intends to finish up a couple loose ends ATM and declare Book 1 completed, or maybe the intent is to make one huuuuge book.

Maybe you could PM the author and find out.

So, The Aeronaut's Windlass did improve after what I found to be a stale opening. I don't know if I would have stuck with it much past the duel if not for Butcher's name on the cover. It ended up being fun, but not a standout among Butcher's work or comparable works by other authors. In particular, it's hard for me not to compare Windlass poorly with the Temeraire series, which handles both its aeronautics and its honorable-to-a-fault protagonists with a bit more depth. Butcher's characters and world were still feeling shallow and a bit on the nose at the end of the book.

Quote:
My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit – we do paperwork so real coppers don’t have to – and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluable, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England. Now I’m a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in fifty years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated: nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden . . . and there’s something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair. The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it’s falling to me to bring order out of chaos – or die trying.

Stand alone or series: First book in a new UF series

How did I get this book: Review copy from Gollancz

Why did I read this book: I had it on my radar for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages because of the awesome cover.
