Android backs up apps and settings. The Google provided apps (e.g. contacts and photos) back up their data. Other data (ebooks, music, podcasts) would need to be backed up separately.
I used to do my own backup of my phone. I stopped largely because it became more of a hassle once I got a Nexus which used mtp and had no SD-card slot, and also because most of the data on the phone is either transient or backed up elsewhere anyway. The one exception is podcasts. I tend to have a backlog on my phone and so may have episodes that are no longer in the current feed. I've solved this by having a separate podcast app download them on my PC. |

Hmm, I never backup my phone... (not counting the automatic connection to OneDrive for my photos). I've no idea what I should backup! Everything on it either comes from apps (maps, music) or I put on it via my PC (again, not counting OneDrive)...
So, what do people actually backup from their phones? |

Hmmm...my calendar and contacts all sync automatically because they are all tied to my gmail account. For notes, I've always just sent an email to myself...but then again, I have been using multiple devices since it was possible to use multiple devices.
![]() Before my android phone with auto-sync, I had a Palm Treo, and I would plug it in at least once a week to sync. I guess I've just never worried about losing things from my phone, because I've never stored things on my phone that weren't also available elsewhere. Shari |

Contacts is based on my gmail and hotmail account, so any changes there will reflect everywhere.
Notes I use OneNote and that's synced in OneDrive (I use my OneNote notes on various devices, not all of them mine). The only thing I could consider would be my text messages. But those are not worth saving ![]() |

And there are folks who use their phone as primary download site or content collector for various things. |

Phones are one area where cloud backup works extremely well. When I bought my new iPhone last year, the setup asked me if I wanted to restore the cloud backup from my previous phone, and a few minutes later I had a clone of my old phone, with apps, data, everything. Virtually nothing to set up, which was a huge timesaver. I think that pretty much the only thing I had to do was re-enter the password of my WiFi network. (Oh, and reload my music, because that's not backed up in the cloud.)

![]() But I do remember one app where I use the backup function. But it's a built-in function, and it backs up to OneDrive. |
