Check the first 4 or 6 characters against this table:

Post again once you find your actual model number.

How is this supposed to work, since Wikipedia and Bing Translate use a proxy run by Amazon? (This is how it works on 3G as well.)


Now, dsmid did post an ACX hack and a sample ACX for using Google Translate instead, I believe that works even when not registered.
Presumably something similar could be done with Wikipedia.

Actually, My model is: 905A Kindle PaperWhite 2 (2013) WiFi (Japan) PW2, tried to factory reset & re-jailbreak then it worked, thanks for support.

Out of curiosity, does anything need doing if you update to 5.7.2.1 on a jailbroken kindle? With previous OTAs, I had to reinstall a "bridge" package - just wondering if that's still necessary.

Nope, the only thing the bridge does is update an out-of-date jailbreak. The jailbreak itself contains its own bridge for surviving an OTA update.


The entry point may have changed, but the last change to the actual jailbreak itself was when fw5.6.x rolled out which ran using a depowered user. If you originally installed a JB >= 1.13.N you are good to go.

I tried to use WAMP server, I hosted the jb folder, passed online, I was able to connect to my wamp server at the adress 'http://192.168.1.48' so my local host ipv4.
I was able to connect to the index.html file
But unfortunatly my kindle don't want to go further than loading stage 1 of the jailbreak...

Are you sure that we have to setup the dns to 'a' ?

It has been observed above, that that is easy to do if you are using linux and use create_ap, or anywhere by temporarily changing the hostname of your computer.

The jailbreak worked once and I had to remove the sponsorised ads so I reset my kindle removed ads and now it don't want to work again after JB starting, I enter ;fc-cache and return but nothing happen ... :/

Any ideas ?

I'm a newbie here, but trying to understand what was written in this thread. And everything looks fine for me, I'm going to jb my new PW3 (kindlefere). Still, there's few things I don't understand:

1. the update; I know, that I can go to 5.7.2.1 after jb - can I do it by "update your kindle", or do I have to do that by another method ?
2. do I need to worry about future updates, that can make me any problems because of Amazon politics?
3. I know that I can come back to "clear" Kindle; without JB, and if I understand it well, I don't loose my warranty. If it's all true, can you tell me how (or link the thread I can't find)?
4. the last one: internet connection and amazon account. Most important functionality in kindle is that I can use dictionaries and wikipedia. I'm not sure, but somewhere I've found something about problems with this after jb. I was looking for 'fake account' informations and also found sth about problems with it on newest update. Can you tell me, if I will loose any functionality after jb? Where can I find some more (actual) info about internet connection/amazon account/aeroplane mode/fake account (and when do I need it)?

Sorry for the lenght of this post, it's just because of brainstorm in my head after reading this forum as a newbie.

1) Use the Amazon package for your model and follow their directions.

2) Almost certainly there will be future updates from Amazon.
You tell me what they will be and I'll tell you if you should worry about them.

3) The 'jailbreak' adds our signature certificate to the device's keystore. One, less than 1Kbyte file.
It does not (at least, not yet) ever caused warrenty problems.
There is no reason to remove the JB file or go back to 'clear'.

4) Just register your device and it will work the way it was intended to work by Amazon.
The posts of problems you are reading are from people who don't want to register their Kindle (or can't register it because its blacklisted (stolen)).

kindlefere method did not work for me, I did reset my kindle, and followed the instruction multiple times but it persisted with the same response ''the selected application could not be started'' I checked the forum but without avail. will someone please help, I am new to this with no former experience.

A few more specifics, please.

Did you place the file named: jb from the zip archive at the root of visible USB storage?

When you did the reset, was it before or after you placed the 'jb' file?

I placed the file after the reset, at the visible storage next to documents. went to kindlefere.com/jb followed the instructions, the experimental browser closed and it told me that the application could not be started

Did you enter: ;fc-cache in the search bar?
Not in the browser url bar.

What is your model number?
What firmware version are you running?

(home -> menu -> settings -> menu -> device info)
You can answer both questions from the device info panel.

You model number is embedded in the first 4 or 6 characters of your serial number (do not post the entire number only the first 8 characters)

The firmware version number is clearly labeled.
