ADE error CLR20r3
I have been having problems with ADE for a few weeks. When I open it, no books show and only a few menu options are available in each menu. My books showed up in the ADE directory so I never bothered to try figure it out. I bought a book from Google today and it took two tries but it finally downloaded.
So I decided to try to figure it out. Bad move. I uninstalled and reinstalled and now I can't download any books - I found a freebie on Kobo to try. Here's the book if someone can try to see if it downloads for them - https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...y-a-honeybee-1 . When I choose Reading from the menu, it crashes. Here's the error message, and I can't find much except to install version 1.72 to fix it. Since the latest 2.01 is needed to download books from Google, that won't work for me. I have ADE version 2.0.1.78765, and Windows 7. Oh yeah, I guess I should ask if anyone knows how to fix this. Here's the full error message: Quote:

(Eeps... just looked at the Adobe site. They are up to version 4.5 already, and the 2.01 download link is hidden on the version 3.0 page. I'd keep your own offline copy if I were you. I wonder how long ADE 2.01 and thus forcing downloads of ebooks with old DRM will still be supported.)
It looks as if there may be a problem with your .NET Framework installation. Adobe Digital Editions depends on that to function. CLR20r3 means ADE uses .NET framework 2.0. It's included in Windows 7, as part of .NET 3.5.1. edit: deleted part of this post. Try this instead: Microsoft .Net Framework Repair Tool Last edited by Katsunami; 02-09-2016 at 11:24 AM. |

Before Windows 7, one would need to specifically install .NET 1.x, 2.0, or 3.0, depending on what program used which version. You might need to install all of them. So you would indeed consciously install it (or have it installed by the program you want to use). However, Windows 7 comes with .NET 3.5.x built in, and that version also provides version 3.0 and lower (including 2.0, which is required for ADE). If you need anything above version 3.5.1, you'll need to install .NET 4.6.1 (current latest version) by hand. Windows 8.x and 10 come with version 4.5 (or newer, through Windows Update), which provides .NET 4.0 and up. Version 3.5 is installed as well, but disabled by default. If a program requires it, it will be enabled, and updated through Windows Update if necessary. Last edited by Katsunami; 02-09-2016 at 02:38 PM. |

I am no longer getting the same error, but nothing works. Programs and features in the Control panel only shows .NET 4.5 installed. I tried to install .NET 2.0 but got an error that said it was already installed, and the repair tool only offered to fix 4.5. Hubby said he installed 2.0, but like I said it's not showing up in Programs and Features.
I tried downloading a book again, but it wasn't added to the directory they usually go to. I can see that it is still authorized to my account. Here's a screen print with the available options showing in the file menu. I tried creating a new bookshelf and apparently that worked, but does me no good. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion before one of my library books is available. I am next in line for one of them. |

Something I thought of: have you tried renaming "My Digital Editions" in the Documents folder to "OLD My Digital Editions"? ADE would create a new folder. Maybe you have a corrupted file in there which makes ADE hang or crash.
If this doesn't work, there are some more options: First, you can't install .NET 2.0 on Windows 7. It's already installed, as part of version 3.5.x, which is included in Windows 7's default installation. This is the reason why you don't see it in Programs and Features. First, try to re-install version 3.5 SP1: Installer here Have it install/update/repair the installation, if possible. It might even try to remove the current installation. If so, try to let it do this, reboot, and then re-install. If it still doesn't work, or you can't re-install, you can try this: - Click start, and type "cmd" without quotes. - Right-click the command line, and start as administrator. - Run the following commands: sfc /scannow (press enter) This will check Windows system files for corruption and fix them if possible. (It gets them from a backup file store, which Windows 7 manages by itself.) Then reboot the computer, and try again. If this still doesn't work, you can try this command (also in an Admin command line): dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (press enter) This will try to fix Windows by getting files that are not correctly installed or are corrupted from Windows Update. Now try again. If it's still not working, I have no ideas that I could offer, without actually seeing the Windows installation myself. And even then, fixing the problem might actually take more time and effort than a backup and re-installation. |

![]() The .NET-error threw me off, thinking it was a problem with ADE. I should have thought of renaming the folder as the first suggestion. Removing plugins, data-files, profiles, and non-essential configuration files from a program is always the first thing to do if it suddenly stops working. You might need to redownload books you had in the ADE folder if you want to read them or transfer them to an e-reader. I don't know; I never keep them there. After importing and unDRM-ing in calibre, I remove them from ADE and the "My Digital Editions" folder. |

What happens with ADE is it gets slower to start up when yoiur ADE directory gets full enough. So once you notice ADE slowing down enough, rename the existing directory or move the contents and you'll be starting over with a fresh directory.

So ADE reads the data of each book over and over again when it starts up? Then it will get VERY slow indeed, after some time

Can you just delete the files in the ADE directory? Especially if they are library books and are already returned?

Yes. Library books can be removed from ADE, and then the leftover files can be deleted from the folder. (ADE doesn't delete the files when you remove them from the program's library.) If you have imported your own books into calibre and had the DRM removed, you can also remove them from ADE and the My Digital Editions folder.
