Free on Amazon UK (Repeat from 2014) -Cold Blood (Aidan Snow SAS Thrillers Book 1) by Alex Shaw

'SAS trooper Aidan Snow is in charge of training a new Polish unit when he is called to lead the barely-trained men into an operation to foil a bank robbery. Disaster strikes when the criminals blow the convoy to hell, and Snow is left fighting for his life in a car’s wreckage. A green-eyed soldier stands over him and watches what he believes are Snow’s last breaths; but he doesn’t pull the trigger. Ten years on and Snow is teaching in Ukraine, keeping a low profile. But events will force Snow into a life-or-death chase. The green-eyed man, Taurus Pashinski – also known as the Bull – is employed by old military contacts to help smuggle arms and drugs over the border of Ukraine. A young, vengeful ex-soldier is drawn into the Bull’s plot when he persuades him that two British investors are his older brother’s killers. The murders will spark a manhunt in Britain and a series of dramatic events in Ukraine which will drag Snow and his friends into deeper and deeper trouble. With crooked intelligence officers, ambitious businessmen and bloodthirsty ex-military, Ukraine rapidly becomes a killing zone. Has Aidan Snow still got what it takes to come out of retirement and face the Bull? What is the Bull really after, and what will he do to get it?
Will the ex-SAS soldier be able to defeat his old nemesis before he destroys everything Snow holds dear? '

Joyland (Hard Case Crime Book 112) by Stephen King is currently dropped to $0.99 at...
Amazon US | Kobo | Google Play | B&N
Quote:
A STUNNING NEW NOVEL FROM ONE OF THE BEST-SELLING AUTHORS OF ALL TIME!

The #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever.

"I love crime, I love mysteries, and I love ghosts. That combo made Hard Case Crime the perfect venue for this book, which is one of my favorites. I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid, and for that reason, we’re going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being. Joyland will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual book." –Stephen King

The Calling: A John Luther Novel - Neil Cross

A Daily Deal at Amazon UK. I haven't read it, but it's had great reviews in the past, and if it's anwhere near the quality of the television series (which Cross created and wrote) it could be worth checking out.

Might be one to avoid if you like your mysteries on the cozy side, though

amazon.co.uk - 99p
amazon.com - $1.43

Product description -

Quote:
Meet DCI John Luther in the prequel to the BBC's epic series LUTHER, starring Golden Globe winner Idris Elba.

He's a murder detective. A near-genius. He's brilliant; he's intense; he's instinctive. He's obsessional.

He's dangerous.

DCI John Luther has an extraordinary clearance rate. He commands outstanding loyalty from friends and colleagues. Nobody who ever stood at his side has a bad word to say about him. And yet there are rumours that DCI Luther is bad - not corrupt, not on the take, but tormented. Luther seethes with a hidden fury that at times he can barely control. Sometimes it sends him to the brink of madness, making him do things he shouldn't; things way beyond the limits of the law.

Luther: The Calling, the first in a new series of novels featuring DCI John Luther, takes us into Luther's past and into his mind. It is the story of the case that tore his personal and professional relationships apart and propelled him over the precipice. Beyond fury, beyond vengeance. All the way to murder…

17 books in Alistair MacLean backlist are now on sale for $1.99 at Amazon U.S. I believe this sale is from Harper Collins and so it may be at other sites as well. While Where Eagles Dare and The Guns of Navarone have been at this price point for a while, most of the others haven't dropped to it before, including my favorite, The Satan Bug.

I couldn't figure out a good way to copy the link that first alerted me to this without including the affiliate link, so here's a link to the general Alistair Maclean webpage. You can sort by price to the see the titles on sale.

The Cadfael and Alastair MacLean books appear to be $1.99 at all the major ebook retailers, if you're looking for them in ePub.

Felony and Mayhem Press is having a Valentine's Day sale:

Quote:
Everyone deserves a valentine.

The iconography of Valentine’s Day tends to be pretty limited in scope. Absent some Very Special Episode, we’re almost always talking about young lovers, attractive and able-bodied, heterosexual and of the Caucasian persuasion.

Well, boo to that. Everyone deserves a valentine, and love takes many forms. We’re therefore offering a sale on a hatful that have some splendid sleuthing, of course, but also some true love. Sometimes the lovers are young and lovely, and sometimes they’ve got the soft bodies of folks well into middle age. And sometimes they’re not lovers at all, but the friends that can mean even more.

So give a little bookish joy this Valentine’s Day to someone you love. And if you can’t be with a one you love, honey, love the one you’re with – even if that’s the one you see in the mirror.
They have six books on sale; unfortunately only two are available as e-books. It appears that you have to buy through their website to get the sale prices (which aren't great, but F&M books tend to be a little overpriced, and rarely on sale) - or at least when I checked Kindle US, these weren't on sale.

The two e-books are:

Vermilion - the first in the Valentine & Lovelace series by Nathan Aldyne, on sale at $5.49 in ebook, down from $9.99

The Suspect - the first in the Karl Alberg series by L.M. Wright, also on sale at $5.49 in ebook, down from $9.99

No date is given for the end of the sale, but since it's a Valentine's sale, presumably at least through Sunday???

The link to the blog post with more detailed info and links for the two e-books (and the other four DTB books) is:

The Rebecca Schwartz Complete Set: Five Funny Cozy Mysteries contains (you guessed it) all five Rebecca Schwartz mysteries by Julie Smith, originally published in the 1980's and 1990's. Smith has been one of the most prolific e-publishers of her own backlist via her own booksbnimble press - IMS at one point there was a thread dedicated just to her books when they went on sale/free. So, many of us may already have most or all of these five books, but if not, the 5 book set is $0.99 on US Kindle Countdown for the next 3 1/4 days.

Titles in the set are: Death Turns a Trick, The Sourdough Wars, Tourist Trap, Dead in the Water, and Other People's Skeletons.

FIVE IRRESISTIBLE FUNNY COZIES...AT AN UNBEATABLE PRICE!
Funny, lively lawyer Rebecca Schwartz is a perennial favorite among cozy readers who can't get enough of smart-mouthed women sleuths. You can't read just one, they're like chocolates! And now, for the first time, you can get all five for the yummy bargain price of $7.99 – only pennies more than half price. That’s what we call a delicious Kindle deal! And by the way, they go well with chocolates.

DEATH TURNS A TRICK

A rollicking tale of murder, romance, and bordellos…

“A lively romp of a novel … Smith shows an Agatha Christie-like capacity for making much ado about clues, concocting straw hypotheses, and surprising us, in the end." -San Francisco Chronicle

“Funny and witty, with a clever, outspoken heroine.” —Library Journal

Rebecca Schwartz, nice Jewish lawyer with a few too many fantasies, is happily playing the piano in a whorehouse when she suddenly finds herself assigned to make sure a near-naked state senator escapes a police raid. That dirty job done, a lovely evening turns even more delightful when she’s picked up by the cops and spends the next two hours at the Hall of Justice. Could this day get any worse? Of Course! Guess who arrives home to find a dead hooker on her living room floor? Fans of Janet Evanovich, Joan Hess, and Elizabeth Peters will get a kick out of this one.

THE SOURDOUGH WARS

“…a brisk and breezy item, which—like sourdough itself—has its own distinctive and satisfying flavor.” -San Diego Union

TO YOU, IT’S JUST A FROZEN LUMP OF DOUGH; BUT TO SOME, IT’S LIFE AND DEATH…

Especially to handsome Peter Martinelli, who wants to auction off the fabled sourdough starter from his family’s famous bakery. But who’d buy a frozen hunk of flour and water? Only, it turns out, every bakery in San Francisco, a national food conglomerate, and an upstart ringer with a mysterious backer.

Someone would even kill for it. And does.

A tasty treat of a San Francisco mystery. A crisp, tangy story you’re sure to get a rise out of. You won’t find it a bit crumb-y.

TOURIST TRAP

Fear stalks the streets! reports the San Francisco Chronicle. It also stalks these pages, and so do a lot of laughs.

You just know the Easter sunrise service is going to be a bummer when the San Francisco fog lifts to reveal a body nailed to a landmark cross. Next: mass shellfish poisoning at Pier 39. A very different kind of serial killer is operating here—one who seems to have a grudge against the whole city.

And this is a very different kind of serial killer tale—a funny one. Well, actually, what serial killer’s funny? But lawyer sleuth Rebecca Schwartz is warm and witty, never takes herself too seriously, and on one occasion offers closing testimony with green hair.

DEAD IN THE WATER

"If you haven't discovered Smith yet, now is the time to do so . . . Move over, Sara Paretsky." —KPFA-FM (Berkeley, CA)

"Smith is a gifted writer." -Washington Post Book World

THAR SHE FLOATS! Deader than flotsam, right in the thirty-foot kelp tower at the Monterey Aquarium.

She’s the aquarium director herself, beloved by all except Marty Whitehead, lawyer Rebecca Schwartz’s weekend hostess, now cooling her heels in the county clink. So what’s the etiquette when your hostess is arrested for murder?

In Rebecca’s case, that’s easy—sign on as her lawyer, try to keep Marty’s kids’ out of the deep end, and somehow avoid drowning in the sea of lies gushing from her client’s mouth. And everyone else’s.

OTHER PEOPLE’S SKELETONS

Rebecca Schwartz, thought she knew her best friend--and her boy friend. Not to mention her family. But what she’s about to learn will rock her world.

Secrets spill out of these pages like hornets out of a nest, each with its own distinct sting, as author Smith weaves a thrill-packed and complicated mystery that’s as much about how little we kno [sic]

Smith also has a title in her Skip Langdon series, Crescent City Connection, on US Kindle Countdown at $1.99 for about 1 1/4 more days, so if you want and have somehow missed that one before...

Quote:
"Sizzles with action ... the most memorable of the series." The Monterey Herald
"... characteristically Smith, full of surprises."The Santa Barbara News-Press
A POWERFUL TALE OF JUSTICE GONE AWRY … SPICY SUSPENSE, DELICIOUS SURPRISES, AND GRITTY REALISM
Crescent City Connection (formerly Crescent City Kill) is the SEVENTH book in the Edgar Award-winning Skip Langdon series by Julie Smith

Sure, New Orleans is known for corruption, but suddenly the good guys get a break—an honest police chief. And then someone guns him down. When a terrifying organization called The Jury takes out the cop-killer, Detective Skip Langdon’s on the case. But no one cares! After all, the guy was a cop-killer.

Skip cares really a lot—because she suspects The Jury’s the brainchild of her old nemesis, self-described preacher Errol Jacomine. And because other lives are at stake—those of Jacomine's granddaughter Lovelace and his younger son Isaac. Eager to add Lovelace to his maniacal fold, Jacomine has Lovelace kidnapped, but she escapes and flees to the bohemian home of her Uncle Isaac, an artist and true eccentric known as The White Monk. Isaac’s taken a vow of silence, but uncle and niece manage to communicate and form a bond that could save both their lives. And Langdon comes up with a plan so clever even the FBI can’t shout her down.

"A superbly written piece of drama, even by Smith's high standards ... plenty of subplots to keep things moving...(and) a wonderful description of the city's bizarre Easter parades" -The State (Columbia, SC)

“Serious suspense… Smith’s colorful characterizations and the showdown with Jacomine make this an excellent addition to the series.” -Publishers Weekly

“If it’s gritty realism you’re craving, gently simmered with spicy suspense and marvelously memorable characters, Smith is the perfect New Orleans tour guide.” —The Clarion-Ledger

For fans of twisty, psychologically astute, heavily atmospheric stories by authors like Nevada Barr, Laura Lippmann, Ace Atkins, and Randy Wayne White.

And finally, you can get Louisiana Hotshot, the first in Smith's Talba Wallis series, for free right now from the booksbnimble website by giving them your email address for their newsletter.

Quote:
"Can’t wait for the next Evanovich? Louisiana Hotshot's Stephanie Plum with Tabasco, dawlin’.” -The Clarion Ledger
The FIRST book in the Talba Wallis series by Edgar-Award winning author Julie Smith
WANTED: HOTSHOT P.I. WITH NEAR SUPER-HUMAN SKILLS.
Confirmed grump Eddie Valentino placed the ad. Hotshot twenty-something Talba Wallis knew exactly how to answer it.

And thus was born the dynamic duo of New Orleans private detectives, one cynical, sixty-five-year-old Luddite white dude with street smarts, and one young, bright-eyed, Twenty-First century African-American female poet, performance artist, mistress of disguise, and computer jock extraordinaire. Think Queen Latifah and Danny DeVito.

In Louisiana Hotshot, their job is to hunt down a sociopath and pedophile who’s molested the fourteen-year-old daughter of their client, hangs out on the ragged edges of the rap and recording industries, and has more powerful allies than a Cabinet member.

But both detectives have unfinished business from the past—in Eddie’s case, something he deeply regrets; in Talba’s, a personal mystery, one so frightening no one will help her investigate. But she knows she won’t sleep till she solves it—and the truth will change her forever.

“A stroke of genius … Louisiana Hotshot is fresh, fast, and touching. Just like New Orleans, it has a lot of ‘tude and a big heart.” -The Times-Picayune

“Don’t miss this one!” -Library Journal

“If you haven’t read Smith before, it’s time to start. If you’re a fan, you’re in for yet another treat.” -Marcia Muller

“Julie Smith writes like jazz should sound—cool, complex, and penetrating right to the heart.” -Val McDermid

“New Orleans and its diverse inhabitants shine in Louisiana Hotshot. Talba, sassy and vulnerable, is a fascinating character made all the more so by her interactions with the gruffly likeable Eddie.” -Romantic Times

Four titles in JM Gregson's Lambert and Hook series are on US Kindle Countdown right now. All are repeat Countdown/freebies. Endeavour Press sometimes relists titles rather than updating, so it may not show that you have bought a title - check carefully to make sure you haven't already bought.

Charlie Pegg was a wanted man.

A skilled joiner, he had full access to the homes of many wealthy figures, including Old Mead Park, a luxury block of flats that is home to the notorious gangster, Jim Berridge.

With his insider’s access and personable charm, Pegg made the ideal informant.

Listening to voicemails and inspecting the houses, he supplied valuable tip-offs to the police.

But the police can’t offer him any protection from the criminals he uncovered.

A ‘snout’ has plenty of enemies – enemies who know how to kill, and how to cover their tracks.

When Pegg’s body is found stabbed in a gutter on his way to deliver his latest intel, it quickly becomes clear that this was a professional job by trained killers.

For Superintendent Lambert and Sergeant Hook, this will not be a straight-forward case. There will be no cooperation from the criminal underworld.

What secret was Pegg about to reveal? And which of his enemies would go so far as to kill to protect it?

Starting with Pegg’s tip-off, Lambert and Hook must pick up his trail and follow his leads to find the killer.

But when their chief suspect is shot dead in his car, the trail runs cold...

Death of a Nobody’ is a gripping crime thriller featuring the popular detective duo, Lambert and Hook.

A body is found in Broughton Ash churchyard.

Male, middle-aged, well-dressed, but with no identification.

Only one fact is certain — he was murdered.

Superintendent John Lambert and Detective Sergeant Bert Hook must set about identifying their un-named victim.

To their surprise, they find he is Ted Giles – a well liked chemistry teacher at the local school.

Beginning their questioning, the pair find that Giles had a secret life, one that he was desperate to hide.

A wealth of female visitors, and an influx of tens of thousands of pounds, lead them to the Rendezvous club.

An escort service that provided Giles with a string of new women - and the police with a wealth of new suspects.

Sue Giles, his ex-wife, from whom he had refused to divorce.

Constance Elson, a divorcée who frequently employed Giles’s services.

And Zoe Ross, the lover who he promised to give up his sideline work for.

Each woman has their own motive, but who committed the crime?

Malice Aforethought’ is another Lambert and Hook thriller from a master of British crime writing.

An Unsuitable Death, #13, $0.99 for about 1 1/4 more days

The lurid news of ‘The Sacristan’ had plagued the headlines for months.

Victims' bodies were deposited in quiet churches or graveyards.

When the body of a beautiful young woman is found in Hereford Cathedral, it appears he has struck again.

Appointed to the case, DSI Lambert and DS Hook soon come to realise however that nothing about this case — or indeed its victim — is as straightforward as it first appears…

Delving into the history of the victim - Tamsin Rennie - they discover a number of sinister characters, each with their own dark motives.

But what’s more disturbing is that this murder bears little resemblance to The Sacristan Murders.

They suspect that a resourceful new killer is within their midst.

With little known about this new assailant, and a number of potential suspects, Lambert and Hook have to solve one of the most puzzling cases they have ever encountered.

'An Unsuitable Death' is a gripping crime thriller that promises to surprise readers at every turn.

She wants out.

Kate walks out from the pub, away from her dealer boss and a life of pushing drugs and prostitution.

But she has also signed her death warrant.

Whilst playing his usual round of golf, Sergeant Bert Hook finds an unpleasant surprise at the eleventh hole.

The body of Kate Wharton.

With her murky past, Kate’s killer will be hard to find.

But it seems that it is not just her criminal connections that have a motive for murder.

What can Superintendent John Lambert and Sergeant Hook make of the room-mate who never reported her missing or the junkie boyfriend who talks of a big argument, and an even bigger mistake.

What of the wealthy golfer Richard Ellacott who spent hundreds in return for Kate’s company? Could their meetings have cost her her life?

Back at home, Kate’s mother stands by a new lover with a history of violence. A mother who never asks how her daughter was killed...

And a few other random US Kindle Countdown titles:

Night Watch is the 6th in the Sister Agnes Bourdillon series by Alison Joseph. It's at $0.99 for about 6 1/4 more days.

Spoiler:
Quote:
When a wayward golf ball hits Matthias Kavanagh in the head, causing a fatal riding accident, it is dismissed by his friends and family as nothing more than a random and tragic act of God.

But Sister Agnes Bourdillon is troubled by the events surrounding his death, especially when she learns that another rider was injured in similar circumstances only days before.

Can it be mere coincidence, or was foul play at work?

Reason tells Agnes she is wrong to be suspicious; those closest to her beg her to let it lie.

But as a nun, she can’t accept that God and the universe can be so cruel. Another death is enough to convince her that a killer is at work.

Consumed by doubts and deserted by those she most depends upon, she will need to delve deep into her reserves of ingenuity and strength to establish not only the truth about what she’s sure is murder, but also the foundations of her own beliefs.

Ultimately, it will be another kind of faith that prevails; faith in herself.

Night Watch is an exciting and fast-paced murder mystery story from the author of Hidden Sins, The Dying Light, Dying to Know, Murder Will Out, and The Quick and the Dead.

Death in Hellfire is the 12th in the John Rawlings historical mystery series by Deryn Lake. It's at $0.99 for about 6 1/4 more days.

Spoiler:
Quote:
July 1767.

Apothecary-turned-sleuth John Rawlings is preparing to undertake his latest investigation - into the notorious Hellfire Club.

Rumoured to have been founded by Sir Francis Dashwood and its members the highest echelons of British society, the club is a byword for scandalous behaviour.

Armed with an aristocratic back story, a faithful companion and a dubious Irish accent, Rawlings descends on Sir Francis’s home attempting to gain an invite to the debauched gatherings at Hellfire headquarters, Medmenham Abbey.

But events soon take a darker turn when one of the club’s attendees is found dead.

Should Rawlings abandon his aristocratic disguise in order to investigate?

After all, one member of the household, a beautiful former lover, already knows him for who he really is.

When another visitor to the house is discovered dead soon afterwards, it becomes clear the deaths are not accidental and that Rawlings must take control.

Can he crack the case before another victim is killed?

Scattered with real characters from history, this is an 18th century murder-mystery romp from a true mistress of the genre.

Traitor's Exit is the 6th in the Boysie Oakes series by John Gardner. It's at $0.99 for about 5 1/4 more days.

Spoiler:
Quote:
Rex Upsdale is a spent, washed-out spy writer.

His trade has worn him down to the bone, and he sits alone, rejected and punch-drunk and full of self-pity. Reality and fiction have become mixed in his mind.

In increasing financial trouble, he is offered some semblance of security if he will take on just one journalistic assignment behind the Iron Curtain.

All that’s required is an interview with Kit Styles, the most notorious of all defectors from West to East.

But it’s not as straightforward as he thinks.

He hasn’t reckoned with the eternally incompetent and feckless Boysie Oakes; his puppet master, Mostyn; a neatly curved companion, Miss Hester Havisham; exploits, escapes and escapades in a tank and a helicopter and an outrageous group calling themselves the International Travelling Circus.

And if he is not careful, the Traitor's Exit might also be his own.

John Gardner, whose Boysie Oakes has become required reading for spy lovers since he first appeared in ‘The Liquidator’, has written a tale that’s part satire, part farce, always zany and certainly not for those who take their spy fiction too seriously.

'Cool polished story-telling with all the sexy sidelines in the best James Bond tradition' Evening Standard

Before becoming an author of fiction in the early 1960’s John Gardner was variously a stage magician, a Royal Marine officer and a journalist. In all Gardner has fifty-four novels to his credit, including Maestro, which was the New York Times book of the year. He was also invited by Ian Fleming’s literary copyright holders to write a series of continuation James Bond novels, which proved to be so successful that instead of the contracted three books he went on to publish some fourteen titles, including Licence Renewed and Icebreaker. Having lived in the Republic of Ireland, the United States and the UK, John Gardner sadly died in August of 2007 having just completed his third novel in the Moriarty trilogy, Conan Doyle’s eponymous villain of the Sherlock Holmes series.

As I mentioned in my previous post, Endeavour Press sometimes relists titles rather than updating, so it may not show that you have bought a title - check carefully to make sure you haven't already bought.

Challenged with the investigation of a crime that appears to have endless motives, Dalgliesh explores the sinister web spun around a half-burnt diary and a violet-eyed widow who is pregnant and full of malice--all the while hoping to fill the gap of logic that joined these two disparate men in bright red death. . . .
