Smile Should I buy a second hand kindle or the new one?
Hi everyone at MobileRead, so I'm struggling to work out which would be the best option for me, I have a galaxy tablet which I have been reading books on but I am finding the screen is not ideal as it reflects lots of light when traveling on the bus.

I'm looking into buying my first ebook reader, as far as I can tell from the web is the kindle would be the best for me to go for.

I'm from the UK and can buy a second-hand kindle wifi 2011 £22 or kindle wifi 2012 for £30 or a brand new one from Amazon for £60.

Now to my questions,

1) has anyone had a second-hand kindle before, is there anything I should look out for?

2) is it worth spending the extra to buy a brand new one?

3) what current model is for sale? it doesn't say on the website.

The main things I would look for are making sure it's in good general condition. If it has buttons make sure they all work well. Make sure the screen displays everything well (they're fairly fragile).

The other thing is to make sure it can be registered to your Amazon account. If it was reported stolen and Amazon has blacklisted the device you won't be able to register it.

Completely an individual decision. A new one might have different features that are useful to the individual and some models have better screens than some older models. Assuming a "Kindle WiFi 2011" and "Kindle WiFi 2012" are the basic model Kindles from those years (Sometimes called the Kindle 4 or Kindle non-touch [silver for 2011, black for 2012], Amazon calls these Kindle 5th Generation) then they have the same resolution screen as the current basic Kindle (sometimes called the Kindle Touch 2 or Kindle Basic 2014). Keep in mind too that a new model will also have a new battery, not one that been used for years.

The current models are the basic Kindle (released in 2014) sometimes called the Touch 2 or Kindle 7th Gen, the Paperwhite 3 and the Voyage. All are touch screen models and the Paperwhite and Voyage have higher resolution frontlit screens. All three models are considered 7th Generation devices by Amazon.

@AnemicOak thank you for all the info you have provided, gives me such a better idea of what I'm looking at on the internet now.

I did not know that they could be blocked by amazon, so I think to be on safe side I will buy a new one, I suppose also with the extra money spent I will have reassurance if it ever broke and I would not have to spend more buying another.

For the price, I would go with the new one.
I wouldn't pay over 10 for a 2011.

Mine was a 50 dollar refurbished one, bought when they were fairly new on the market.
It was just my back up until my PRS-T1 got broken.

It's only covered under warranty for the first year. After that, Amazon might offer you a discount on a refurbished model to replace it, but they won't replace it for free.

If buying second hand on ebay for example, you just need to make sure you are buying it from someone with high feedback ratings, and also use Paypal to pay for it so you have some comeback.

Buying new is probably worth it though as long as you can afford it. And as you can buy a basic Kindle without the light for £60 it's not a huge outlay.

Just to double check - do you plan on checking out library ebooks? You may find that this is not an option on the Kindle outside of the USA. Check with your library.
