Overdrive and 0 copies, why?

Why is it that when I look at different libraries Overdrive eBooks I see some of them show 0 copies available. Are publishers pulling their eBooks after the libraries have paid for them? Is it a glitch? Does anybody know what is going on?

Perhaps best to address your question to one of the libraries concerned? It would be interesting to know.

I did post my question to one of the libraries in their email form. I just have to wait for a reply. I was hoping maybe someone here might know something.

All I can add is my own experience in the past, when I once had two books on hold with zero copies, a situation that persisted for a couple of months. I abandoned them; there seemed no point in using up two holds on books that would never materialize.

Do you see something like this?:

For this book:

---> I see this info. at my overdrive library:

Copies

Available: 0

Library copies: 6

2 people waiting per copy

_______________

---> If it says 0 available, it just means all 6 copies are checked out (for the above example), if they are all checked out but there are no holds it won't say anything about the number of people waiting per copy, it would just say:

Available: 0

Library copies: 6

--->Once you put a book on hold, you'll see in your account your hold status (i.e. next in line, 1 person ahead of you, etc.).

--->Are you saying it says Available: 0 AND Library copies: 0?

My guess, and it's only that, is that such books had a limited number of checkouts and have not been renewed.

Some publishers use expiring licenses, yes, so that could be it.

With one of the books with which this happened to me, it was a new acquisition (as Jon's post indicates). I just checked and the library has a copy now.

ISTR actually hearing that this kind of thing would happen in exactly that case.

Is this a "pre-release" title? I have one of those on my wish list; it says the following:

Available 0
Library copies 1
23 people waiting per copy

I haven't ever actually put a pre-release title on hold. My library doesn't allow very many holds so I don't want to use them up on a book that's not even available yet. If I were that desperate to read the book, I would pay to pre-order it from a store so I could read it as soon as it is released.

That book was just released - I know because it is on my wishlist at a couple of ebook stores - so it seems unlikely the license could expire already, unless the library bought a very limited number of copies

Seems like a weird glitch, but if it is it's looks to be specific to that library (in other words it's not showing zero everywhere or anything). My library shows 14 copies with 5 people waiting per copy.

It's a brand new release and PRH doesn't have a loan cap/expiring license on their titles.
