Just finished The Bitter Season by Tami Hoag and it was a typically good Tami H read.

Finished DADDY'S GIRL: The Campbell Murder Case: A Saga of Texas Justice by Clifford Irving. A long but fascinating read full of colorful characters and seemingly impossible people, considering this is supposed to be non-fiction.
There is another book about these people/this case called Cold Kill by Jack Olsen, but is out of print and there is no electronic version that I can find, so I'm not going to try to compare and contrast. At any rate, good (long) read, one that Dngrswife will like, I think. Next up, I think I will go to Blood Shot, another V.I. Warshawski book... I mean to read some more Kathy Reichs at some point in time, as well. |

Great series. There is a fifth book, The Bridge to Neverland (2011), wasn't quite the same though. Also it left on a massive cliffhanger and hasn't been revisited, maybe because it flopped (IMO)? ... ... Currently reading The Hound of the D'Urbervilles, by Kim Newman. He writes Alternate Universe takes on PD stuff, I really liked his Anno Dracula (Dracula won, took over England, vampires mainstreamed, and then Stuff Happens). That ^^ reminds me I should really get around to reading books 2+ The Hound of the D'Urbervilles is the diary of Sebastian Moran, right-hand man to Professor Moriarty, as they engage in a really weird mirror of some of Sherlock Holmes' most famous cases. |

I will try to find something else to start tomorrow now. Edit: Started House of Suns by Alastair Reynolds this morning. Mystery set in the distant future and, at least so far, throughout the Milky Way. Last edited by Dazrin; 02-08-2016 at 11:21 AM. |

Yes, I kept insisting on saying "Justice" instead of "Mercy" for whatever reason. I knew about the 5th book, but I'm led to believe that Peter isn't in it. And I'm not interested in reading it.

He shows up at one point, but he isn't very interesting. As I say, it was rather a letdown.
I suppose treating it as though it never existed is a reasonable idea. ... I HATE IT when authors do that! (Murder, dismember, and sacrifice their series to eldritch abominations, for no good reason.) One of the most memorable occasions was Artemis Fowl. ![]() ![]() |

I lurk here and pick up some good information on books to read ... and, maybe, others to avoid. I've tried posting a few times, but I have always lacked the discipline to keep it up.
I'll try again. I just finished reading Chanukah Guilt, by Ilene Schneider. The story is set in southern New Jersey (an area that I'm moderately familiar with) and the protagonist is a bird watcher who visits areas like the Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge (which I know well from my days with Fish & Game). The mystery was easy to solve; the trick was finding proof. I enjoyed it. It looks like Ms. Schneider wrote a sequel -- and not much else, so far. I expect I'll pick it up soon. Meanwhile, I've started Dead Angler, the first book in the Loon Lake Mystery Series, by Victoria Houston. It's set in the rural north woods of Wisconsin. So far, it looks pretty good! It looks like I've had this sitting in my ereader for three or four years -- I probably should have started it sooner. |

Val McDermid's novel Northanger Abbey is a take on the Austen novel of the same name. This version is set in the 21st Century. The book broadly follows the plot and recreates some of the characters from the original. Now, of course, it is not The Mystery of Udolpho that inspires this Catherine Morland ("Cat" as she styles herself) but instead she is obsessed with Twilight and several imaginary titles. She also texts and uses Facebook incessantly.
It is certainly not as good as the Austen original but is a pleasant bit of fluff with some funny as well as silly moments. |
