The only, single (like: just 1 (one)) file to drag to the root is the one in the jb directory, named: jb

That's it, everything else in jb.zip is the server-side files.
Best to just delete the jb folder in the root before you move the file of the same name into it.

Don't 'factor reset' (ever again) it will erase what you are trying to install.

As soon as I saw this post (by complete chance!) this morning, I jumped over to my PW3 and mashed the Airplane Mode button... I really want to Jailbreak, but I'm waiting a bit in the hopes that more concrete OTA update prevention news will surface. I'd rather not lose Whispersync, Personal Documents, and the on-device bookstore...

What is the problem? Just jailbreak now, then go ahead and use WhisperSync, PDOCs, etc.
There is no need to worry about OTA updates, at least, an OTA won't destroy a working jailbreak.


If you are concerned that you will get nailed by the OTA while trying to jailbreak, use a smartphone hotspot or ad-hoc network via create_ap, or something like that. It's been mentioned and linked several times -- which OS do you use?

Ah, I misunderstood about the technical details. I was still thinking about my time playing cat and mouse with Apple in the iPhone jailbreak scene, where a system update would kill a jailbreak. I'll go ahead and jailbreak when I have the time. Thanks for setting me straight!

Under normal circumstances, I have access to Mac, Windows, and Linux, but my Mac needs repairs... I'm not too worried about getting nailed with an OTA while attempting the jailbreak.

Just keep your fingers away from the "Reset (to factory defaults) selection" (after you jail break).

Since our Jailbreak and add-in applications aren't part of the 'factory defaults' . . . .
You can probably guess what happens to them.

I can confirm that the jailbreak survives upgrading to 5.7.2 followed by factory reset, at least on PW2 (9017 2201). After reset, jailbreak needs to be fixed by reinstalling Update_jailbreak_1.14.N_install.bin and then KUAL and any other packages you want.

BTW I want to say many thanks to everybody who made this jailbreak possible! <3

Yes - the current version of the jailbreak makes attempts at protecting itself for fat fingers on the "factory reset" feature button.

Note the word: **attempts**
No guarantees can be given for tomorrow's firmware version, so I gave none.

Also, do Amazon's update packages rewrite the diags partition as well?

Awesome! Jailbreak successful with the kindlefere/JB method on my Voyage (B013 0907 English). Mainly did it for the screensaver hack so I can have the current cover displayed as my screensaver, but I will look at some of the other hacks now. Did the kindlefere/JB method on 5.6.5, then installed KUAL and the screensaver hack. Updated to 5.7.2 and then reinstalled the screensaver hack and all worked perfectly. Been waiting for this since I bought my Voyage the weekend they were released in 2014! Thanks to BranchDelay and all who made this possible!

Very Happy to report another 2 Jailbreak successes...

2 Paperwhite 3's G090 G105 English language (for the records)

I checked the Kindle root directories after the procedures were finished via my Win 7 laptop, and both PW3's now have a "jb" file and 2 new folders?? "mkk" and "rp"

Both are still on 5.6.5 and are back protectively in airplane mode

Awaiting any news on being able to survive OTA updates from Amazon, since from what I have seen so far, I am not interested in the "improvements" by going to 5.7.2 (especially reports of the Helvetica font becoming THINNER on PW3's)

Now I am off to explore all the other goodies/options that are possible with the JB having been accomplished....

Usually not.
The diags system it ships with is usually the one it always has.
(Not even the factory initial firmware load package updates diags)
And, there is free space in the diags file system.

Some of this critical to being jail broken and staying that way takes advantage of those facts.

Also, the normal update process does not touch /var/local (/dev/mmcblk0p3).
