In my case, it's 818 EPUB books, but as I have a Kindle, I also keep an AZW3 version. Also, I have 55 Delphi Classics, which can take up to 130 MB of space for the larger books. My library folder is now 5.4 GB in size.

Compared to some others on these forums, my library is rather small.

Tutorials can be found everywhere.

First, get some memory and a hard disk/ssd with the Brix and put them in. You now have a small computer.

Find a tutorial about how to install a minimal Linux distribution I would choose Debian Testing, as it normally doesn't break while updating (as opposed to Unstable), but it's still much newer than Stable.

Then find a tutorial on how to secure the system, and then one for installing Owncloud.

In essence, you're installing a small server, but instead of serving FTP or Web, it serves OwnCloud.

That's about the size of my library right now. There are some books I reread and others I want for reference.

Mega has been in legal battles/uncertainty for a long time. It looks so cool and 50GB free storage seems unreal, but it may end up being the proverbial 'if it sounds too good to be true..."

For me, the bottom line is anything I put in a cloud (and I have Dropbox, Google Drive and Copy) is stuff that is not super personal and it is lose-able. Anything really important I'm not trusting to any cloud.

It depends on the services your router provides. On my router, I can access those files through FTP. If your router has a cloud service built in (like some newer Synology NAS-es have), you can access them that way.

I wouldn't get into anything with Kim Dotcom behind it. I consider that guy to be either a criminal, or very close to it.

I wouldn't personally choose to do business with a company whose founder has been convicted of fraud, insider trading, and embezzlement, either.

I agree. And even he is saying Mega is not safe, so doubly worth staying away.

Copy replacements

This is all well and good, but other than Dropbox, which is too expensive for me, which of these cloud drives won't destroy my Calibre library?

Google destroyed my back up library. The books were all still there, but I lost all the metadata. I do not use the cloud library as my main library, I just copy the files to it in Calibre. I have had to restore my library from my Copy backup before. So I really like having it. I'm trying out Amazon, but I don't think it will work because I had to upload the file, rather than sync it. I guess I will see once it finishes uploading.

I don't have any family nearby and I mostly work from home, so I don't have an office at which to store a backup. Has anyone tried storing in a safe deposit box? I realize I will be limited to accessing it only during business hours. But at least my old tax return stuff would be safe there - stuff I would never store on a cloud storage.

As far as I know, you run the risk with all of them.

If calibre is using its database file while the cloud service program is trying to upload the changes as well, you run the risk of corrupting the database. It is recommended to shut down the cloud service app while you are using calibre.

As long as you are careful about when you sync, anything should be safe.

Google is the exception. It renames files without warning or prompt, see the sticky in the calibre subforums.

Even though it's slow, I am going to put the backup copy of my Calibre libraries in Box. Given the Google issues, it was a choice between Box and AT&T locker and I have more experience with Box.

May have to bite the bullet and get the Dropbox upgrade. I know $10/month doesn't seem like a lot, but it would have to come out of my book budget and I'm just not sold on the need for it. But Dropbox is so easy to use compared to many of the others. Decisions, decisions...
