5.6.5 Jailbreak (closed-kindle) -- released! - Page 36

First thank you to Branch Delay, NiLuJe, knc1 and eschwartz who are spending a LOT of time helping everyone on this.

Here is what I did for a PW3 (G090 G105 US English)

-download the jb.zip and unzip it
-move the "jb" file to the root of Kindle
-eject kindle; turn off airplane mode
-visit "kindlefere.com/jb/" on kindle's experimental browser [NOTE: watch the forum to see if this address is in favor, or another is suggested; or if there is an easy "a" method with a webserver; going to any website is done at your own risk]
-follow instructions
when the Jailbreak tells you in the notification bar to run ;fc-cache in the search bar -

Open the Kindle Search (looking glass Icon on newer touch enabled devices) and simply type in:
;fc-cache
followed by enter.

-when JB successful shows, go turn on airplane mode
-connect to computer and get jailbreak bridge file
-put "Update_jailbreak_bridge_1.14.N_install.bin" in Kindle root
-eject kindle; -make sure you're in airplane mode
-go to settings and update kindle

-connect to computer to next install KUAL
Get the KUAL-v2.6.zip archive and unpack.
If your device runs on FW 5.x, use the KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 file and put it in the Kindle's documents folder.
Eject kindle
Look for KUAL in the list of books, and click
click again on quit.

Next is the kual MRpackage installer
connect to computer
unpack the kual-mrinstaller-1.6.N.zip archive, and COPY the contents to the root folder of kindle.
(for me, it asked to replace the extensions folder that KUAL installed)
-eject kindle
-run KUAL
- back to home on kindle

Now time for the hacks. For the screensaver hack:
-connect to computer
copy the Update_linkss_0.24.N_install_pw2_kt2_kv_pw3.bin file into the MRPACKAGES folder on kindle
-eject
-run kual
-click helper
-click install MR packages
-watch the messages
-watch thee reboot
-put kindle to sleep
-Get kindle screensaver hack page and do a happy dance

install screensavers/covers as directed

Go forth and enjoy.

a malicious host could modify the website to brick your kindle. unlikely, but possible. this is a separate issue from the jb script executing.

hence, I recommend hosting it yourself.

Do we also need to mention how to get the archive release?
That is:
Click the 'attachments' icon in the index page 'Ratings' column, then select 'jb.zip' from the list.

Or maybe just a direct link to the post buried in the thread where it is attached.

Just to confirm: Kindle Voyage S/N B013 0907 US English. Updated to 5.7.2 after the JailBreak. ssh root@voyage takes me right into the machine, and everything else seems to work just fine. Thanks to Branch Delay, NiLuJe, knc1, and the rest of the community.

Ok it worked well on PW3 G090 G105 in German language without factory reset.
Had problems installing the Librarian Sync bin (package installer just destroyed in every time) but managed by pulling the zip from github and putting the LS folder into /extensions (seems to work).

Now I'm really curious if anyone can confirm that this:

is still working on PW3 with 2.6.5? I loved it on my old PW2, especially for the margins ...

If the Jailbreak is done succesfully (I already installed Kual and Jailbreak Bridge), i can turn off Airplane Mode right? Or do i need to disable OTA? Will updates delete the Jailbreak?

So I have jailbreaked my Kindle Voyage and updated to 5.7.2. Launcher and Koreader still work, but everytime I want to put another .bin file on Kindle root, it gets deleted whenever I disconnect my kindle from the laptop. Probably shouldn't have updated, but can anyone help here?

I've read the whole thread and seen nothing about PW1 compatibility...

I have a jailbroken PW1 (s/n starts B024) running 5.4.4.2, with the "update.bin.tmp.partial" trick to prevent auto-updates - I keep wifi on for reading position sync and auto-delivery of books purchased on the Amazon web site.

The latest PW1 firmware I've found is 5.6.1.1. I think I can sit tight until Amazon release something later, does that sound right?

You can Dave, but you don't have to if you wish to make use of the new the firmware. JailBreak works fine on 5.6.1.1. See this post.

You will need to install those custom packages with MobileRead Package Installer.

Thanks. Will try. But what is it that it doesn't work like this? The jailbreak worked like that, adding Koreader and launcher also (me thinks). Just curious why it doesn't work like that any more.
