Finished Apocalypse Dance by C. J. Carella. This one wasn't as satisfying as the previous two books in the series, because it seems like there should have been three books built from this.

Seriously, three different world-ending fights in this one... I will read the fourth one, though. I enjoy the characters, and the writing overall is not bad.

Meanwhile, I've also finished reading Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time by Dava Sobel. This was a very good book. It outlines the Longitude problem that plagued seafarers for centuries, the differing means which were tried to solve that problem and the ultimate solutions obtained.

I have always been a fan of mechanical watches (though I can't wear them... my personal magnetic field tends to break them after a few months), and while this book is a layman's guide which barely brushes across the more technical features which set Harrison's chronographs apart from their predecessors, it kind of makes me want to learn much more about horography.

So, next up is The Ragnarok Alternative, the fourth New Olympians book. After that, perhaps another non-fic, or perhaps a thriller.

This story didn't grab me much by itself but it was interesting to see how some pieces we couldn't clearly see earlier came about. Definitely don't read this until after you have read the original trilogy and it would be better to not read it until you have read all the way up to Bands of Mourning.

Next up: Brat Farrar by Josephine Tey for the February Book Club.

Well. I had high hopes for this, but I was disappointed. Rather too much attention to making the story fit in with Edgar Alan Poe's life and writings, and rather too little concentration on characters and story. I did finish it, but I should have abandoned it. Might appeal to really big Poe fans.

Next up: Lightspeed Magazine, December 2015. I've made sure I have this issue on my reader now!

I recently finished The Last Passenger by Manel Loureiro and Rhe Forgotten Man by Amity Shlaes. The Last Passenger was very good at establishing a vaguely creepy atmosphere and it's a thriller that I'd read again.

I'm not sure how I'd rate The Forgotten Man. I had a hard time keeping track of the many people involved in this history of the 1929 stock market crash and the New Deal. I do understand much better how Ayn Rand would have come to write Atlas Shrugged after I read about the various attempts by both Hoover and FDR to manipulate economic conditions.

I'm going to give this series a try and I just started reading it.

I don't get much reading time on the weekend so I have till Monday to decide what to read next.

**Loved** reading (actually listening to) Longitude. I found the audiobook to be engrossing.

Great book. Read it in pBook format when it came out, and then got the audio book. And then when we were in the UK on a trip, went to Greenwich to see one of them in the Maritime Museum. Time to get the eBook version and read it again. (Hmmm, wonder what month we do non-fiction for the book club?)

ETA: Hmmm. Could go under June, for a Science selection, or November is History month. Definitely a book worth reading for either.

After reading trollen rose by PMF Jhonson, I found it to be interesting, although it had a few flaws.

First, the positive: The main protagonist is neither superhuman nor weakling. He seems to have talents and flaws like everyone else, and is a compulsive thief.
Ungor, who is somehow framed as a villlain, seems to be more likable than not.
Other characters who are meant to be detested are detested thoroughly, and those liked are honorable and interesting.
I truly appreciate the extra effort in creating lore and backstory, as well as adding a quote at the start of each chapter, although many were hit and miss.

Things that detracted from the general fun of the whole thing were how self Pitying Rev is as a main character, the romantic aspects, as well as the humor. Often as a reader I felt left out of the loop when it came to those things. Strangely enough, other aspects of interaction could well have been my favorite part, which seems inconsistant.

All in all, I liked the book, and am glad I read it.

Finished Ragnarok Alternative the fourth new Olympus book. This one was on the short side, but it did conclude the series well.

I thought overall the series was good, but the last two books could have been formatted a bit differently; the author likely could have stretched this series out to six books, if desired, and the break between books three and four done a bit more evenly. With that said, I will likely reread these at some point in the future.

Meanwhile, down in Houston, TX... I am currently reading DADDY'S GIRL: The Campbell Murder Case: A Saga of Texas Justice by Clifford Irving, which is a crappy title for a book, but so far interesting... it's the story behind the murder of a lawyer and his wife in 1982.

Considering the title, it seems one of the four daughters is behind the assassination of her parents, but I am one third of the way through the book so far and while they have a gunman going to trial, so far there is not enough evidence to get the girl, and motive is still pretty illusory.

After this, I am not sure... I'll likely pull down a scifi or old-school fantasy, I guess.

I liked one of the original SF stories (the Hugh Howey one) and one of the reprints (The Charlie Jane Anders one), although I had read it before.
I also liked one of the original Fantasy (by Richard Parks), but hated the other original fantasy so much I'd forgotten the first until I wrote this! I didn't like either of the reprint fantasies.

The ebook Novella was OK-ish, but I wasn't engaged by the characters, and the plot was clearly meant to be secondary to the engaging characters, so that wasn't good.

I usually like more of the stories, and I usually don't really dislike any of them. I really disliked two or three of them this month, so that's not good.

Next up: Sidhe-Devil by Aaron Alliston. A Baen purchase from June 2008. It looks fun, but I'm betting I've missed a previous book.
