Best read titles

Is there some central location that readers have listed their best books that they have read? If I select a new category, perhaps one that I am not familiar with, how helpful it would be if I could view some top titles in that category.
I know our likes vary, but still think it would be a big help instead of, perhaps, just picking a dud and maybe thinking "Well I`ll give that genre a miss".

Just because one book in a given genre is not too your liking does not mean all books in that genre will be not to your liking.

Check out the Reading Recommendations forum. There is a sticky there with "Recommendations for Your Favorite Book Genre" that might give you what you are looking for.

Some other things to look at might be the "What were your favorite books of xxxx" threads. Here are 2015 and 2014. I think there might be some others but I am not sure.

For more specific help, just ask in that forum and post some books that you do like and what you are looking for. It helps to have books you like even if you are looking for something in a different genre so that we can get a feel for what you typically enjoy.

You can find all kinds of lists on Listopia at Goodreads (genre, best of, etc.)

Thank you I`ll try some.
Yes I know taste is personal but some of the books I`ve read, irrespective of genre,
are appallingly bad. Story line, language, composition......Yeh I know I`m a grouch,
but I still don`t know how these very bad books turn up on some of these E Book suppliers lists with glowing terms like " marvelous, thrilling, not to be missed..."

Is it ads saying that or the book description itself?
If it is in the book description, I tend to avoid the book. Especially if it starts out the most exciting thing since the Joy of Cooking.

If I am considering reading a book by an author I'm not familiar with and the store or library does not have a free preview, often Google books (not the same as Google Play books) will have a preview. Often all it takes is one sample chapter for me to see if the author's style is to my taste or not.
