Yes, it's a gamble putting another OS onto the device. I only did the nook because it was not much use with the OS it had on it.
What is it you don't like about Samsung software? The only difference I noticed between my Nexus and Samsung is where stuff is in settings. I use Nova launcher, SwiftKey keyboard, Jorte Calendar and Power Toggles in the notification bar. Maybe that's why I don't see much difference? I started using Android years ago so I had to find replacement apps for a lot of things because the stock versions sucked. Which reminds me I also use Opera now but have used many other browsers.

Touchwiz

And lots of useless Samsung apps that fill up the storage on devices. Makes everything run slower than pure Android.

I use Nova Launcher so I never see TouchWiz, but I do remember now that it was crap. I always root my android devices so I remove bloatware too. I saw in your Wikipedia link that for the Galaxy S6 they didn't include bloat since they removed the sd card. If you don't root you should at least be able to disable the bloat. It doesn't get your space back, but at least the resources won't be used.

I may be always buying Samsung in the future because they are simple to root. My S6 is the 920F version, but it also works with AT&T in the US and the bootloader is unlocked.

Doing that is very smart. I imagine it is a much better experience with the hardware by rooting and removing the extra junk. Probably not very many people that do it, but would be a better experience with Samsung hardware.
Right now I have a Samsung phone that is not rooted, had to go through and turn off lots of apps to make it usable. Compare that to a Moto E phone I have that has a minimalist interface and simple Android setup. Samsung seems to go out of their way to complicate Android.

I have three tablets right now. When those die, I'll probably replace only one.

I'm typing this on my 7" BlackBerry Playbook. Man, I wish this brand had been successful... Overall I prefer it to my 10" Android.

Eventually though I will have to replace it. I get nervous using an unsupported device on the Internet (and several websites nag me about the out of date browser.)

I need a replacement for my malfunctioning (due to physical damage) 10" though. Comics look amazing on it, and I love my Marvel Unlimited subscription.

I hope the tablet market stabilizes. It's gonna take a while to save up some money.

I use my Nook HDplus for magazine pdfs, some reading with Moonreader (mostly stuff with illustrations) due to its large screen size. Also used it for audio books that refuse to play on my iPods. It's been worth every penny. I also have a fire HDX primarily for text to speech but also to read email and newspaper every morning. Some amazing things on these tablets and given the slowish price, I can see that even those slow to get technology, have already bought in.

Typed from my Fire HDX. Essentially a tiny computer.

Maybe use it as a digital clock, or if the screen is not too bad, for some family pictures?
Dusted off the tablet to see what use it can provide. It can't be a digital photo frame as it only has 1gb of memory! No wonder it was so buggy. I deleted a few apps to see if I could install the Nook app so I can use it as a magazine reader (my library Overdrive has magazines and newspapers and uses Nook). Well the Nook app is about 450mb so after installing it, I didn't have any space to download the magazines. Who the hell offers 1gb of internal memory? I could use an external card I suppose but I'm not sure if the magazines are allowed to be stored off the internal memory. And I'm pretty sure apps can't run off the external card, right?

In any case, the tablet is proving itself useful--I needed an alarm clock away from my bed and I didn't want it to be my phone. Today was morning 1 of the rooster alarm via the crappy tablet.

Thanks for the suggestion Conan!

Many apps can be run from the SD card. Not sure about Nook, but I know Kindle can as I just moved to SD on a device.

This might be of help...

I really want to buy a new Fire, but what Amazon released this year had inferior resolution. The Tab S I bought, which I really didn't need, but wanted something that could access Google Play, wasn't really overshadowed with Costco's Black Friday offering this year. But I have to say, except for long, long episodes of Gummy Drop, I don't use my tablet all that much, as I went back to reading on my kindle PW.

I have a Galaxy tab S 8.4 I use for an eareader, Youtube and light Browsing.
Plus the family has a couple of older tablets for general browsing, email etc.
I recently got a surface PC/tablet, which I use for light development work, as it has Windows 10.

Both my kids recently got new netbooks (running Windows 10) for school, so they double up as tablets anyway.

That's not even counting the several decent Android phones we have which have many uses, apart from being a phone.

I'll be out of the tablet market for a few years now and I might not be buying an Android tablet at all again, as Windows tablets/PCs are pretty affordable now.
Still, I love Android phones, but we all have those and we're good for a couple of years as well with them.

Years ago I picked up a cheap tablet at Walmart that had 8 gigs of memory, but only 1 gig available for apps. I'm guessing you might have a similar situation. There is not much you can do about it that I know of. I think I used "My Alarm Clock" app on it for awhile, I couldn't do much with it. If it has decent audio, maybe you could use it to stream Pandora or something to a bluetooth speaker.
If the tablet allows it, the Pandora app can be stored on an sdcard, and a few other apps. If you have some digital music files you could play them off of a sdcard. Same with ebooks, you could use Moon+ or Fbreader and read the ebooks off of the card, but I'm guessing the screen might not be good for reading.
They do make nice alarm clocks with big digital readouts

I do believe someone didn't get their coffee that morning !

How do you interpret a steep drop in sales as "THE END" ?
I'd personally just interpret it as market saturation, but keep in mind that tablets also gained popularity VERY fast, and thus had to suffer from "Market Bubble-burst" at some point.

Purchased a new iPad Pro and a used iPad Air 2 last year (2015). We don't normally upgrade until 2-3 newer ones come out. Both were an exception as 16GB on an iPad is no longer usable. We don't fill our machines with stuff but we had to remove quite a bit to upgrade. Plus iOS really needs at least 2-4GB memory nowadays.
