At least not where Joey's concerned! I read more romance than anything else, and it's funny, how in that genre I don't want anything to happen to the main characters, but in any other genre it isn't as big of a deal for me when something happens to a main character! |

After writing "Tess" he stopped writing novels for a while, as I recall, because of the public's shocked reaction. It was thought that since Tess was an unwed mother even though that was due to being raped, that there was nothing important to say about her. In fact initially his publishers refused to publish it. Wikipedia says he gave up writing novels because of the reaction to "Tess" and "Jude". Both of these are wonderfully sensitive novels. I've read quite a few of his novels and all of those I've read have been excellent. Yes they're sometimes tragic but beautifully so. Barry

I suspect I'd have a very different point of view as an adult with a better understanding of the cultural mores at the time of the novel.

The last fiction book I quit reading was because the author had the characters doing very unrealistic things and he had thrown in unnecessary nudity. It was obvious what group of "authors" he had been listening too. Sorry, in a thriller I do not need to know what the protagonist is wearing or not wearing unless it is relevant to the scene. |

Even what seem to be unrealistic things might not be. I read a thriller recently where a character's therapist was influencing her to do some things that seemed to be kind of far out to overcome her phobia. I was getting annoyed, but I don't abandon books, and eventually it turned out that there was a reason for therapist being so odd--he wasn't a therapist at all.

I think I've been confused about the intent of this thread. I had assumed that everyone was talking about those times when you just have to stop reading and walk away for a few minutes before continuing. I didn't realize that the topic was quitting the book. I can't imagine doing that. That's kind of like jumping out of an airplane because it's going too fast and too high. Barry |

The author had listened to others that told him ALL books need unnecessary sex and very graphic details.
