Pick up my NGP this evening...

I can tell I'm going to hate the N button...but we'll see.

Also bummed I can't put on my own screen savers.

Bigger issue, it appears that it only uses the meta data rather than file name to display books. Which is a problems as I'm used to using calibre to rename the books to include series name & number.

Over to the calibre forum to post some questions...

Thanks.

You can side load library books. Use ADE to download them and then put them in Calibre and have Calibre side load them. Problem solved.

You can put the same information you put in the file name in the metadata using Calibre. It's simple to do.

thanks for the advice on Calibre. Unfortunately I'm having trouble making it work. I downloaded and installed it. I checked out a book from my library and downloaded it using ADE. Then I opened calibre and added the directory with the epub file to the calibre library. Then connected my device. Now when I try and send the book to my device it gives me an error as though it can't communicate with the device. I set the default directory on the device to be "my files" so it doesn't try and send it to the main memory. any idea what I am missing?
thanks again.

The "Ultimate Rotation Control" app from the Google Play Store permits me to control the orientation of the screen. By selecting "Reverse Portrait" it flips the display upside down, so the dang button is at the top instead of the bottom. (You can also choose "Landscape" or "Reverse Landscape" if you'd rather have it on the side of the device as you read in landscape orientation.)

You can use that app to make a single global setting that affects everything, or you can set it to behave differently on an app-by-app basis.

The only side effects of moving the button to the top is that the on/off switch is now on the lower-right side instead of the upper-left side, and the charging socket moves to the top along with the button, but those changes don't cause any problems.

I don't use the BN reader so I don't know how that works. I use the Aldiko reader because I just like it.

I rename books all the time to reflect where they are in a series. Seems like I need to reconvert them from EPUB to EPUB after changing the metadata to have the title changes stick when I transfer the files to either my Aldiko reader or to my bride's Kindle PC app. Not sure, but I imagine it might be the same with other changes made in Calibre to the metadata.

Calibre Companion works great for me at beaming books from Calibre to the NGP after I tell it to connect as a "Wireless Device" (which is the only way I've tried to do it).

I got amazon's new "Bookerly" font and installed it for aldiko.... amazon say it's designed explicitly for e-ink readers... other than them having their kindle devices in mind, who knows what that really means...

Regardless, I really like it...

new update

For anyone who hasn't seen it yet BN put out a new update for the GLP. The version is .24 and replaces .14. At least on mine (for now) it has taken care of the issue with library books saying that they have been returned. We will see if it continues to work.

I don't suppose there's any way to get rid of the obnoxiously large title and page number display?

You could use a different e-reader program...

I use aldiko... other folks have their own preferences...

Oh, plus a utility that allowed me to turn short presses on the dang Home button into a very useful Go Back button, while requiring a long press to go Home.

He probably used the xda framework, which requires root. However the app "All In One Gestures" can also do this, without root.
