That is the correct place to change the font size for Glo and Aura.

This patch is not enabled by default, have you set patch_enable = `yes`?

Although I don't have an Aura to test it on, it works on my Glo and I would be surprised if it didn't work on the Aura too. Has anyone else with an Aura tried it?

Yup, that make my footer chaotic, the page number become so big & unchangeable.

So far i'm using all the patch not because i want it readable edge to edge, but i want to mimicking real book/novel size's text width. Beside i'm patching off all the epub's build in format, i just want to narrow the width & adequate top bottom margin. So far i'm just happy with stock bottom (after turn the patch to no), just add some margin to the top. Actually i dont have any problems with the books from kobo store, just sideloaded books is so ugly formatting & so different from one to one. To me reading full screen hurting my eyes, esp with the glowlight & more distracted, make me tendency to leave the book, but that just my opinion.

That sounds like what can happen if you edit the patch and accidentally make one of the replacement strings shorter than the original string. You might want to try starting again with a fresh copy of that patch, or else post the whole patch here and I'll see if I can spot anything wrong with it.

will this patched firmware allow me to ssh, sftp/scp out of the box? or will I have to make some modifications? Just received a Kobo touch today so any advice appreciated

These patches don't have anything to do with ssh, but there are instructions somewhere else in the forum about how to set up telnet, ssh, etc. Most things on Kobo devices don't require the firmware to be patched, you just install the components you want as you would in any Linux system.

Edit: I don't use telnet etc. so I don't know which thread is current, perhaps someone else can point the way. I thought it would be listed in the List of Tweaks / Hacks / Mods thread but it doesn't seem to be there for some reason.

There are instructions for this on the wiki that work - I've used them on several firmware versions, including 3.19.

Most everything related to patching/customization can be accomplished without Telnet, but if you really do need it, it's an option.

Those instructions will lead you through obtaining copies of system files, modifying them to enable Telnet/FTP, and then updating your device.

Files modified are as follows: etc/init.d/rcS, etc/inittab, etc/inetd.conf

Be very cautious when editing system files. It is possible that you can brick your device. You'll want to use a text editor that understands Unix line breaks. (e.x. not wordpad/notepad in Windows).

I've uploaded edited files for the Kobo Aura H2O. While I believe they will work on other devices, I don't have any to test with. Others may be able to confirm. Use at your own risk.

If you want to use them, download the copies here. Unzip "telnet_on.zip" and copy the KoboRoot.tgz file to the .kobo folder on your device.

Next, launch the web browser to ensure WiFi connection stays active, and telnet in using the ip address assigned by your router. Username is root. No password.

I'd suggest setting a root password for security or disabling telnet when you are done, by loading the KoboRoot.tgz from the "telnet_off.zip" file.

I have incorporated telnet and ssh into the MegaUpdate, and described the procedure to set up ssh and disable telnet on my blog several times. See http://www.preining.info/blog/tag/kobo/

Could you make a version of your megaupdate that does not include the patches as a lot of people have customized the patches to how they want?

You mean only: KSM, init.d adaption, ssh server, some fonts? I think about it, should be eaily possible.

Or you simply grab the KoboRoot.tgz, unpack it, remove the three libs (nickel, ...) and pack it back into KoboRoot.tgz. That is the easiest way.

patch Allow launching browser without wifi connected

hi,
as it may be useful to someone else, I converted as a patch definition the modified libnickel.so that allows to launch the browser without wifi connected.

Further info at original thread of the patch (all credit to cartel who produced the file, I just converted it).

Warning: I didn't test the patch, just verified that the libnickel.so produced by this patch definition is equal (same md5 hash) to the one downloadable at the orginal thread mentioned above, so I assume it is correct.

Code:
<Patch>
patch_name = `Allow launching browser without wifi connected`
patch_enable = `yes`
#
## Normally the browser requires the wifi to be connected.
## This patch may be useful to use the browser to connect to localhost, or local files
## Credits and further info: https://a3nm.net/blog/kobo_glo_hacking.html
## https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=271049
#
replace_bytes = 7C9E66, 05 46, 01 20
replace_bytes = 7D88A8, 04 46, 01 20
</Patch>

I doubt it very much. The only way would be if the firmware already has a landscape mode that Kobo have disabled and that just needs to be re-enabled.

GeoffR, Thank you for the answer. Where can I go to ask the developers about this feature?
