Only 99 Cents for this 732-Page Biography of Queen Elizabeth of England!

Ratings for this book are hard to come by (it was published just last month)--I could only find 5. But they are all 5s!

I love the Brits. I really do. But, let's see. There is Queen Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Elizabeth II. That's not even counting Queen Consorts Elizabeth Woodville, Elizabeth of York, and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. Shouldn't they try some other name for a while--like Mary? hahahah

The Life of Queen Elizabeth (Albion Monarchs). By Agnes Strickland. Rated 5 stars, but from only 2 reviews at the present moment at Amazon; rated 5.0, from 3 ratings at GoodReads. Print list price $25.99; digital list price N/A; Kindle price now $0.99. Albion Press, publisher. 732 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Life-Queen-Eli...dp/B0193GZOGG/.

Book Description

On the 7th day of September, 1533, Elizabeth I was born.

She was the daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife, Queen Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth I was declared illegitimate when her parents’ marriage was annulled.

Elizabeth’s early life was full of potential and promise. Despite being branded illegitimate and the jealousy of her older sister, Mary I, Elizabeth enjoyed spending time playing and studying with her younger half-brother, Edward VI.

On their father’s death, Edward VI, succeeded their father. He was merely a child at the time. However, due to religious differences, Edward VI attempted to remove Mary I from the line of succession. Following a lung disorder, Edward VI died at the tender age of 15. With both his sisters removed from the line of the throne, their cousin, Lady Jane Grey was appointed queen. But Mary I was able to depose her and became queen in 1553.

Shortly after her succession, Mary’s jealousy of Elizabeth I deepened and she ordered the imprisonment of Elizabeth as it was believed she was in engaged in a plot against Queen Mary I. Despite the Spanish Ambassadors urging, Mary I refused to have her sister executed.

Despite the harsh and solitary conditions, Elizabeth I survived the confines of the Tower and rose up to become one of England's greatest monarchs.

Elizabeth proceeded to reign for another forty-five years. In her early years as Queen, she re-established the Reformed Church and announced that she would remain a virgin. This she did and never produced an heir to the throne.

Despite this, there were rumours of a potential marriage with Robert Dudley. However, Queen Elizabeth I offered his hand in marriage to the Queen of Scots and therefore closed off that avenue. Following this, several suitors are proposed … of which none came to fruition.

Queen Elizabeth’s relationship with the Queen of Scots took a turn for the worse and Elizabeth had her detained. With this came several threats and assassination plots on Elizabeth’s life.

Under Elizabeth’s reign, England prospered. Through wars, religious upheavals and political unrest, Queen Elizabeth I won the love of her people and her death was mourned by all.

The Life of Queen Elizabeth portrays a detailed account of the queen’s life, starting from her birth and early years to her death.

Well, when Strickland wrote, there'd only been one regnant Elizabeth, so the meaning's clear. Even Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon wasn't yet a twinkle in her daddy's eye, because he hadn't been born, either.

Your post caused me to think about the fact that I could probably come up with more ratings than I did, what with the book being originally written and/or published in 1850 as it was, and there likely being other rated editions to be found (I always like to find at least 20 ratings on a book that I post, so as to have as valid an average rating as possible).

I found two other editions at Amazon with ratings. Both had two ratings, and both had 5.0-star averages. At GoodReads, I found one other edition. It was rated 3.0, from 3 ratings. So, the average of all ratings comes to somewhat less than 5.0, but it is still very high. It looks like this would be a very good quality book to read.

Tudor: Passion. Manipulation. Murder. The Story of England's Most Notorious Royal Family by Leanda de Lisle is the best I've read so far about Elizabeth (I), though obviously it starts out a lot earlier than her birth.

Incidentally, it appears you can get it for $1.99 in paperback form from Barnes & Noble.

I was going to send Amazon a message asking them to price-match (I have Prime and so get free shipping there), but I noticed that this copy at B&N is apparently a secondhand one (in "very good" condition). I doubt that Amazon does that kind of price-matching.

Because of your recommendation of the book, I've put it on my wish list at Amazon. One of these days I'll catch it at an used book retailer (GoHastings, BetterWorldBooks, et al.), cheap and with a free shipping promo going on.

Thanks.

Get a FREE Pdf Ebook on the Pomegranate Plant and Fruit, Courtesy of UCANR.

The pomegranate fruit is extremely popular in some parts of the world, such as the Middle East. It seems that the pomegranate fruit has grown in popularity in the United States little by little, over the last several years at least. I've been located in the South--Deep South and otherwise--all of my life and I don't remember ever hearing of it until a few years ago.

Why should you be interested in this fruit (at least)? Well, it's good for the heart, having lots of antioxidants I think that it is. If you're a Bible student, perhaps you remember that it is mentioned quite a few times in the Old Testament, once or twice in some pretty important contexts. Some people like the flavor of it (I haven't acquired a taste for the flavor, personally).

This ebook was posted by the University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UCANR). The publisher, Third Millennium Publishing, likely had something to do with it being offered--and offered for free.

Title: The Incredible Pomegranate: Plant & Fruit.
Format: Pdf.
Author(s): Richard Ashton; Barbara Baer; David Silverstein.
Publisher: Third Millennium Publishing.
Pages: viii + 118 + A-15.
Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews: Not rated at Amazon or GoodReads. However, rated books at both places by the primary author, Richard Ashton, are rated highly to very highly.
Price: $0.00.
Lowest Price at Amazon if available there: $23.95 (physical--"new"). There is apparently no digital version of this book sold at Amazon.
Book Description (Amazon):
The Incredible Pomegranate has been written for fruit-growing enthusiasts, what we like to call a gardener's pomegranate book. All the growing and culture requirements are included. But it is much more than just how to grow pomegranates. There are tales of trips to far-off places in search of pomegranates and people. You will read descriptions of so many different pomegranate varieties, including ornamentals, that it will seem that there is no end. Then you will read comments from different tasting sessions where people try to decide which variety they like the best. The Incredible Pomegranate tells you about the many uses and great medical benefits of this miracle fruit. Gardeners will appreciate the lists of nurseries that sell some of the different varieties, as well as a way to get cuttings of some of the exotic varieties from Central Asia. Included are 17 pages of color photos.
Comments: There are few, if any recipes in the book. There are no photographs or other images within the main part of the book, but there are numerous beautiful ones at the end of the book (Appendix I).

Of course, if you're not hell-bent on owning the book, you might borrow it. FYI, the book's listed in Worldcat.

Thanks for letting all of us know the "lowest" price.

There's a question that your post prompts me to ask of Mobilereaders who are monitoring this thread: Mobilereaders, if the price of a digital book is the same as the physical book, which one (all other things being equal) will you buy? Why?

If it ever happens I will post.

Usually close prices mean expensive & I buy neither and wait for a price drop on one or the other.

Thus I have bought a 'used' hc when the ebook only dropped 3 months later with paperback publication.

I'll buy the digital book. I'll even pay a premium, albeit not a huge premium, for the ebook. Not only is it far more convenient (easier to hold, adjustable fonts, fits my purse) to read on an ereader, it also doesn't add to the pbook clutter which I'm trying to reduce.

I hadn't thought about close = expensive, but it sounds true. I'll be on the watch now for examples, as I troll the Internet.

Yeah, I've learned that patience is one of the major keys to saving lots of money. The problem with most people is that they don't have much of that; I struggle with impatience a lot myself.

One difference between you and me seems to be that you must still have room in your house for physical books. I literally don't, in any reasonable way! NOT !!! I'm trying to replace as many physical books as I can with digital ones.
