But perhaps this is geekish ?
Seriously--yeah, it is. Firstly, you can more easily detect FXL books by simply looking at the devices available for, at the top. Nor can you reliably adjudicate quality; I can tell you that we've done books with just shy of 1,000 images--large ones, initially--and our images are of much, much better quality than half the books I see out there with 10 images. Thirdly: sure. If you have to worry about download times, THAT, I understand.

But I'd guess that certainly, you're 1 in 100.

Not sure what the recipe book link is about?

As you say, people are different. I always look at the book's size on the product information. I find it a more reliable indication of the book's heft than the "pages" estimation appearing there. If it's not that, then once again I wonder: what the heck IS it? Why is it there? Are you telling me that Jeff Bezos sits in his pool house, slurping margaritas and assigning KBs and MBs at random?

I defer to your wisdom, because you have formatted a hundred times more books than I have, but I find it very, very curious. I also wonder why the size posted on the Amazon store page is less to be trusted than the size shown on the book's pricing page, though it is certainly true that the delivery fees I see on my Prior Month reports more closely relate to the latter.

I now withdraw from the discussion.

Sorry, still don't really get the point. Nonetheless, you can tell from the "avail on these devices" tab that it's an FXL book, as it's unavailable on any KF7 devices. Additionally, the top bit tells you that it's "optimized for larger devices," which is nearly always a tell for FXL.

The mere fact that it has 300mb, give or take, with ONLY 288 images, is another dead tell of FXL. (Or incompetent reflowable bookmaking, take your pick). ;-)

Because, as I've learned in painstaking detail, since forming my company, there are boatloads of folks out there that have bandwidth not much better or faster than an old 300baud modem. They need to know the download size, to manage their bandwidth. OR, they are on satellite providers like Hughes, and have monthly limits. Those folks *do* have to look at the DL size, but my point was that typically, I don't think that most urban or even suburban buyers look at the file size. I don't--and, of everyone, you'd think I would, right? But I don't.

Don't be daft. I'm not spewing "wisdom." It's just...numbers. The size of the file on the pricing page is what the publisher pays, to Amazon. That's clearly unrelated, if you think about it, to the final download size. AND, if I may, that DF number is pre-PW (Delivery Fee and Publishing Workflow, respectively). Amazon has not yet added their DRM, or done whatever other black magicks that they do behind the scenes. If they are adding the KFX format, as we've all discussed... Anything is possible.

No, it didn't? When I looked at it, the only active devices were KF8. Are you sure you are looking at that one?

Hitch
active devices ?

I read it as a list "available on these devices" I agree some listed are not active links but in other books the only devices listed are those for which the book is available

Thus http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008VO3PA4/

From the link you posted I see this list.

Kindle Fire Tablets

Kindle Fire HD
Kindle Fire
Kindle Fire HDX 8.9''
Kindle Fire HDX
Kindle Fire (2nd Generation)

Fire Phones

Fire Phone

Free Kindle Reading Apps

Kindle for Windows 8
Kindle Cloud Reader
Kindle for Android
Kindle for Android Tablets
Kindle for iPad

Which is a good indication that only KF8 or equivalent is supported. There are no KF7 only devices listed.

Maybe I'm dense as two planks. You are likely right.

That's my take. Now, when it comes to the Amazon front-end, or things that are all "publisher-y," that's not my bailiwick, so...I could, absolutely, have been wrong. (Yeah, yeah, I know. Inconceivable!) <g> Nonetheless, as rare an event as that might be, I'm delighted to learn something different. Um...anyone in this discussion own that book? Little.Egret, do you own it? The reason I ask is you could try to download it as if it's to go to a K7 device (assuming you have one?) and see if it balks.

Wait--Little Egret--do you have a K7 device registered to your account? Anyone here from GB have a K7 device? You could try to dl the sample, to a K7 device, and just see if Amazon will send the thing. If they do, the list is as-displayed. Hell...if it was made with KTC, I don't know how Amazon winnows that to buyers. I genuinely don't, so...you, LE, could be correct, perhaps it's not restricted. Hmph. I wonder if it's one of those PDF-->KTC-->pseudo-mobi-->eBooks? I'd do it, but as I don't have a UK account, and the book isn't available in the US, I can't.

I own it (bought as Daily Deal)

No all my devices are 3rd Gen or after.

Here's a item that shows the same pattern (list contains all devices I think)

http://www.amazon.com/Jude-Obscure-T...dp/B004UJDJC8/

May be a mistake of course.

I Googled [Kindle DX Kindle (2nd Generation) Kindle (1st Generation) "save * 100%" "these devices" site:amazon.com ]

Another example

http://www.amazon.com/Cooper-Moon-Ca.../dp/B008MP38DG

Which has Cloud Reader missing but DX present.
