Book covers suddenly reverts once Wi-Fi is enabled?

Recently I've edited some Amazon books by simply swapping the cover to a better one via Calibre. Sometimes I convert the file to AZW, or leave it as the default.

But now when I connect my Kindle to Wi-Fi, some (but not my older edits from last year) will revert to the original cover. So I have to delete them from my kindle, re-edit, send to device, ad nauseum.

What am I doing wrong? I NEVER click 'sync & check for downloads' on my Kindle because I know that does for sure undo all edits.

Ah

that would explain why I'm having the same issue with covers on my new PW3 which came with 5.6.5 but not on my PW2 which I haven't upgraded for yonks to preserve the custom screensavers and other goodies.

Most irritating as I resize all the covers so that the thumbnails all line up nicely - I hate it when they all end up being different sizes.

Try this:

before unplugging the device, copy the folder "[userstore]\system\thumbnails\" to a backup folder, e.g. "[userstore]\system\thumbnails.bak\"

Unplug. Let the Kindle do it's weird thing...
Reconnect your Kindle, delete the first folder and replace it with the backup.

@blaenk reported that this works, the Kindle will only override your cover thumbnail when the ebook itself is added/updated.

Though it means removing all the books from the PW3 and resending them all with Calibre so that I can copy the folder with the right thumbnails... oh joy... and then remembering to copy the new Calibre thumbnails every time I add more books.

I might stick with my easy solution of simply switching from cover view to list view

It wasn't anywhere near as painful as I had expected since the Kindle doesn't need to re-index the books.

Blaenk's solution works a treat

it just means an extra step now to have the correct images when adding books thanks to Amazon's brilliant diktat of how things should work
