Kindle Paperwhite dead.. resurrection?
Hi everybody,
my Kindle died some days ago: I can't see anything apart 3/4 of screen saver (the rest is totally grey), it has horizontal and vertical lines and it flashes on and off once per second. I've tried all the soft/hard kind of resets, and I've also taken it apart to remove the battery etc. It just happened when (as always) I put it into the wall charger ( original ). Unfortunately I'm out of warranty so I have to repair it or buy a new one (maybe not a Kindle after this..). I can't access to the content but my Linux dmesg output says this: Quote:
Thank you in advance! |

Please post a photo of the screen. But from what you've described, it sound like a broken substrate and if so, It's dead Jim!

Yes, that is a broken screen substrate. If you happen to have a broken Kindle with a working screen (eBay usually has a few of these) you can put the two together and get one working device, but otherwise you are out of luck.

It doesn't need to be hit, any pinpoint pressure on the screen or torquing of the device will crack the screen as well. My husband had his first Kindle in his bag, with a thick Oberon cover on it. Something in the bag got pushed against the Kindle while he was commuting and broke the screen.

The final break may not happen at the time the stress is applied to the screen. The substrate is nearly as thin as a piece of paper (do a search on here for teardown pictures if you want to see it). It could have developed a stress fracture that you wouldn't see and then at some later point just a bump or expansion/contraction from a small temperature change could have caused it to completely break.
And IMHO I think bending/twisting pressure is the biggest killer. |

I've had a Reader since either the end of 2006 or the beginning of 2007 and I've not broken the screen. I'm on Reader #6 and not a broken screen in the lot.
