You are not getting the point. Was just an example. Win10 is meant to be run on each and every device you own. Just so everything runs and looks the same. Why they have universal apps. You can setup any cloud system you want, but you have to set it up first. What MS is doing so that you don't have to set it up, just log in and go - whether it is your tablet, phone, computer. You can argue that you can do everything better with linux (which one - all a garbled mess with incompatible to each other distros). Which OS do you recommend that will run on everything? Never seen a linux phone. MacOS and iOS talk somewhat to each other, but they are not even close to being the same. Android on a desktop? Doable, but would you really want to - it would just be a giant tablet, no more useful. Is Win10 and Win10phone going to be right from the start? No, of course not. But MS has been working to integrate those two for quite a while. Forced updates so that each machine that needs to work together works together is great - no need to worry which weird combination of updates you chose or not to install. A computer on build 89 is going to be just like another one on build 89 feature wise. You can't have it both ways: either the user is in full control and support has to keep track of 50 million issues, or everybody has to have the same features to let support focus on one configuration. You are not on the latest build, then there is your problem - update to latest build and see uf you still have the problem. Others will have the same problem and it can get fixed for everybody.

Do I like getting control ripped out of my hands? No, but I can see where MS is coming from.

I got it. They spiked his Kool-Aid. He's One of Them now.

DT, no one is saying there isn't potential value to cloud-sync across devices, or that centralized data collection might not be a vital enabler of it.
We're saying we'd like the provider to be a bit more open about what data they are collecting and what they are going to do with it.

It's the "what they are going to do with it" part that's my only concern, but then I use Google/Android/Amazon/Alexa so how concerned should I be about M$?

Perhaps the complainers should try reading Microsoft's very extensive and detailed Privacy Statement. It is on their web site.

It sets out in considerable detail what is collected and how it is used for each of its products (including Windows 10 and store apps). Of course any such statement can be expanded upon with further detail, but the Microsoft one seems to include more than sufficient detail for those of us who do not have special needs such as being persons with high international public profiles.

Unfortunately I think you are on a losing streak DuckieTigger trying to explain that here.

As it would seem from the reactions that some are not familiar with (and perhaps do not want to be, or are never going to be familiar with) Microsoft's objectives with respect to automatic fluidity of data across multiple devices.

No, I'm just not sure what one had to do with another.

I was musing upon the difference between fundamentally-cloud-based systems and non fundamentally-cloud-based systems, telemetry vs. core functionality.

Then I got back something about cross-hardware compatibility, forced updates, and possibly also reproducible builds.

I genuinely have no idea where he is going with that, but it doesn't seem to be pointed at anything I said...

Yeah, cuz THAT'S what the billions of consumers who got GWX pushed in their face should be expected to do....

Thank you for your responses, as their nature confirms to me in a clear and succinct manner my suspicions about the inability of some to knowledgeably contribute to discussion.

*sigh*

It is a take it or leave it deal. Don't like the whole package, then don't use Windows. Simple as that. And it is that simple. Don't tell me you didn't see that coming. Whoever didn't see it coming by the time that internet / phone activation became necessary is delusional.

Yes, I am afraid you are right.

Cannot argue with consiracy fanatics that blindly believe Forbes that the information is not available or not in enough detail.
