I'm good at only buying books on sale, but I don't have a huge amount of spare cash and am generally very careful with my spending in general. So the fact I've still got a ton of unread books to wade through and don't need these books isn't terribly clever.
Well, do you read more than 55 books a year? In which case it's all OK.

Yes, but when added to the free books I've picked up, and those borrowed from the library, its too many! However, a bargain is still a bargain and not worth missing, I've not exactly spent a great deal! I'll make up for it and not buy as many this year.

Renting a movie or two (watched Inside Out and Minions) seems to have saved me.

Unallocated ebook budget for 2016: £94.29
Amazon ebook credits: £94.00

Of course, I'm still getting £1 credits every time I order something on Prime. I think some more movies are in my future.

Inside Out was hilarious. I really liked all the concepts and how they played them out. It will be a movie I add to the collection at some point.

January 8th and no purchases this year yet. I don't think we'll see a repeat of $0 like last year, but hopefully a $50 budget for the year can get me through some trickier countries.

I stepped back from the precipice last night. A book I wanted and that would apply to one of my annual challenges was available in hardcover for under a buck in the Amazon marketplace, so with shipping it would be less than $5. The ebook is $12.99 from PRH, so no hope of a discount there.

It was hard. But I knew if I gave in this early in my resolve not to buy any pbooks for six months, I was cooked. Whew! I know from experience that it gets easier as new habits are formed.

On other fronts, I have to admit to having bought two ebooks thus far. One's a $1.99 deal; the other a $2.99 deal for which I used some of my slow-shipping credit. I'm not worried, although acquiring at this rate will man an addition to the TBR by year's end, so I need to be mindful. Fortunately, we've all agreed that books which are free with the shopping credit don't count!

One of my big targets in cutting down overbuying is not to buy too deep into a series. Only buy the next book. If there's an unread book you already own between you and the bargain, then don't buy it. This is doubly important if you haven't even started the series, and don't know if you'll like it.

It's a good idea in principle, but so far 3 of my 6 acquisitions in 2016 have been sequels to books I haven't read yet. In fact series I haven't started yet. I bought a whole 2-book series earlier in the year (used paperbacks, from an author I've wanted to read for a while but who isn't well supported with ebooks in the UK (Carol Berg)), and I've just been tempted by low prices into buying books 2 and 3 of a highly-recommended quartet where I bought book 1 in December. Ah well. It's still early days. I can make it up...

Yep, great suggestion. It works on several fronts: tastes change, series deteriorate, and sometimes you never much wanted to read it anyway, hence the languishing title(s).

During the first Kobo 90% off madness, I picked up a few mystery series; a couple were old favorites and the other one or two were highly recommended. What I hadn't realized at the time, though, was that I no longer read mysteries, or at most only the odd one when I needed something mindless. The outlay wasn't huge so as an object lesson it could have been worse.

My other issue is that while I have no problem getting rid of paper books I realize I won't read since they're taking up space and are a visible reproach regarding money wasted, I almost never delete an ebook for which I paid. Silly, really, because I don't like eclutter, either. At least I got over freebies early and got rid of them all then.

... all Forgotten Realms fantasy novels that were available in eBook format and I didn't have yet (+/- 250 books). I also have all available books in the Eberron campain setting.

Now I wonder if I should have done that. It didn't cost a lot, but I have 300 books I have yet to read, and another 50 or so that are only available in paper which I don't yet have. Maybe I'll never be able to catch up.

In hindsight, I should probably have stayed with the Drizzt series, the Avatar quintet, and some of the better series in the universe, such as Erevis Cale.

Well, so far this year, I did buy a book to use up my Amazon ebook credits before they expired. It was the first book of a series...of course. I also technically spent a Kobo coupon on a medical book that I found I didn't need, and Kobo has since refunded. However, it is now a store credit, so technically already spent.

I'm waiting for my next credit to show up and then convert my Audible account to Audible Lite for $10. I will be able to save my credits and use them for something I want vs. just using them up so I can temporarily cancel my account. Glad a MobileRead member mentioned this option!

When I see that, I'm really glad I don't enjoy reading series

So far this month I'm doing well, having bought 1 book which was on my wish list and reduced to 99p, plus my Kindle First and Samsung freebies (these 2 don't count though cos they're free ). Obviously got my planned purchases at the end of January to use up the last of the credits that expire on the 31st; plus the second splurge by mid-February. Annoyingly, the second lot expire on 15th Feb and I have a pre-order which is released on the 18th.

I am Most Annoyed... I keep a watchlist in eReader IQ to get notified of price drops. Just had a look through and noticed that most of the books I want have gone up in price in recent months, ranging between 50p to £3 more To say that I am unhappy about this is an understatement.

So far this year I've bought 38 books for £61.36 and I still have around £80 of no-rush credits left that must be spent sometime before mid February. (Most before end January.)

I'm not sure how I'm going to feel after the money runs out.

I suspect that I will be buying rather more expensive books than usual on 31st January, but perhaps enough daily deal bargains will come along before then.
